US looks to fully reset relations with Saudi Arabia

Biden to mend fences with Saudis after calling Gulf kingdom a “pariah” during 2020 election.

The White House intends to fully reset relations with Saudi Arabia.

Senior US officials told CNN that the White House has conveyed to the Saudis that it wants to “reset” the relationship between the two nations, putting the 2018 murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi behind them in order to return to warm diplomatic ties with the strategically important Gulf kingdom.

Late last week, President Joe Biden shot down reports that he was planning an official visit to Saudi Arabia at the end of June.

The trip would have ended Saudi Arabia’s “pariah status” earned for the killing of Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The turnaround is a major foreign policy change for Biden, who when running for president promised to treat Saudi Arabia as a “pariah” over the US-based columnist’s killing.

The Biden administration also released an intelligence analysis in 2021 that alleged Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman planned the murder.

But senior officials described a White House scrambling to lower domestic energy prices as inflation rises faster than it has in four decades.

Biden has allegedly decided that rekindling relations with the Saudis supersedes any ethical qualms from Khashoggi’s death, and that restoring ties with an oil-rich nation in the era of Russia’s Ukraine invasion is a necessity.

“Both sides have decided that for the sake of achieving peace and stability in the Middle East, we need to move past it,” one of the senior officials told CNN.

Russia issues rare condemnation of Israel following overnight air strike in Damascus: We demand that the Israeli side stop this evil practice.

Russia on Friday issued a rare condemnation of Israel for an overnight air strike in Syria attributed to the Jewish state which significantly damaged Damascus International Airport.

“In the early morning hours of June 10, the Israeli Air Force again attacked the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic. The target of the attack was Damascus International Airport. According to information that was received, serious material damage was caused to the airport,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement quoted by Maariv.

“We are forced to emphasize that the ongoing Israeli shelling of Syrian territory, in violation of the basic norms of international law, is unacceptable. We strongly condemn Israel’s provocative attack on critical Syrian civilian infrastructure. Such irresponsible actions pose serious risks to international air traffic and endanger the lives of innocent people. We demand that the Israeli side stop this evil practice,” the statement added.

Satellite images published earlier by Israeli company ImageSat International (ISI) show the damage that was caused to Damascus International Airport following the overnight air strike which Syria attributed to Israel.

The images show significant damage to the runways. ISI said the strikes “completely disabled” operations at both the airport’s runways, with each runway appearing to have been struck three times.

Following the air strike, Syria’s Transportation Ministry announced it had suspended incoming and outgoing flights at the airport for 48 hours, citing technical disruptions.

Israel has not commented on the reports from Syria.

This is the second air strike in Syria attributed to Israel in the past week, after Syria claimed on Monday evening that Israel attacked the Damascus area.

According to the reports, the attack earlier this week was also carried out from the Golan Heights, and loud explosions were heard in the capital, but no injuries or damage were reported.

In late May, Syrian media reported that explosions were heard across the capital Damascus.

Syrian television reported that the country’s air defense systems were activated against “hostile targets” following an air strike which was blamed on Israel.

A radio station affiliated with the Syrian regime reported that three people had been killed in the air strike.

Russia condemned the Israeli airstrikes on Damascus International Airport on Friday, official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said in a statement.

“We are compelled to reiterate that the ongoing Israeli shelling of the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic, in violation of the basic norms of international law, is absolutely unacceptable. We strongly condemn Israel’s provocative attack on the most important object of the Syrian civilian infrastructure,” Zakharova said.

According to Zakharova, such “irresponsible actions create serious risks for international air traffic and put the lives of innocent people in real danger.”

“We demand from the Israeli side to stop this vicious practice,” the diplomat concluded.

Syria halted flights to and from Damascus International Airport on Friday, the transport ministry said, a few hours after Israeli air strikes hit south of the capital.

Damascus bombing

A Syrian military official quoted by the state news agency said Syrian air defenses intercepted the Israeli missiles, downing most of them, but that the early morning attack caused one civilian injury and some material damage.

Cham Wings Airline, a private Syrian carrier, said it was rerouting all its flights to Aleppo International Airport.

The transport ministry’s statement did not refer to the Israeli attack but cited technical reasons for the airport’s shutdown.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday the Israeli bombing had damaged the runway after targeting “warehouses of Iranian militias” near the airport.

An Israeli military spokesperson declined comment.

For several years, Israel has been attacking what it has described as Iranian-linked targets in Syria, where Tehran-backed forces, including Lebanon’s Hezbollah, have deployed to help President Bashar Assad.

Israeli airstrikes

On Monday night, an alleged Israeli airstrike targeted sites south of Damascus.

The Syrian Capital Voice site reported on Tuesday morning that the strike had targeted a factory for developing Iranian weapons in the town of Aqraba, south of Damascus.

The last alleged Israeli strike in Quneitra was reported in May, when one strike targeted the Qurs al-Nafl site and another strike targeted sites in Jubata Al Khashab and az-Zuhur, areas where both the Syrian military and Hezbollah operate.

These attacks come on the backdrop of growing tensions with Hezbollah and Iran in Syria, and the weight of the pressure landing on Iran from Western leaders, chiefly the IAEA resolution to censure Iran for nuclear violations.
