The summons, to a meeting to take place on Monday, came days after Moscow criticized Jerusalem for its vote to support removing Russia from the UN Human Rights Council and for Lapid’s comments.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry summoned Israel’s Ambassador in Moscow Alexander Ben Zvi on Sunday over Foreign Minister Yair Lapid’s condemnations of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

The summons, to a meeting to take place on Monday, came days after Moscow criticized Jerusalem for its vote to support removing Russia from the UN Human Rights Council and for Lapid’s comments.

“We noted another anti-Russian attack made on April 7 by Foreign Minister Yair Lapid in the context of his country’s support for the UN General Assembly resolution to suspend the Russian Federation’s membership in the UN Human Rights Council.

“We have already given our assessments of this unlawful and politically motivated resolution,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday, not citing a specific official as the source of the remarks.

“There is a thinly veiled attempt to take advantage of the situation around Ukraine in order to divert the attention of the international community from one of the oldest unresolved conflicts — the Palestinian-Israeli one.

(credit: FLICKR)“As you know, in violation of numerous decisions of the Security Council and the UN General Assembly, the Israeli government continues the illegal occupation and ‘creeping annexation’ of Palestinian territories, as a result of which over 2.5 million Palestinians in the West Bank of the Jordan River today live in scattered enclaves cut off from the outside world. The Gaza Strip has essentially become an ‘open-air prison,’ whose two million people have been forced to survive for almost 14 years under the conditions of the sea, air and land blockade imposed by Israel,” the statement said.

“It is also noteworthy that Israel’s course of maintaining the longest occupation in post-war world history is carried out with the tacit connivance of the leading Western countries and the actual support of the United States,” the statement concluded.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry declined to comment on the summons or the statement from Moscow.

(credit: Oleg Pereverzev/Reuters)Earlier this month, Lapid accused Russia of committing war crimes after photos of mass civilian casualties in Bucha, Ukraine, came to light.

“A large and strong country is invading the territory of a smaller and weaker country with no justification,” Lapid said. “The photos and testimony from Ukraine are horrific. Russian forces committed war crimes against a defenseless civilian population. I condemn these war crimes.”

At the beginning of Russia’s war on Ukraine, Moscow summoned Ben Zvi and accused Israel of “supporting Nazis.” Russia has claimed that it is “denazifying” Ukraine as one of its reasons for starting the war.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has been quieter than Lapid on the Ukraine war, avoiding mentioning Russia and mostly expressing sorrow at the bloodshed in his comments on the matter.

Israel has tried to preserve its deconfliction mechanism with Russia, by which it informs Moscow before it strikes Iranian targets in Syria. In addition, Bennett attempted to mediate between Russia and Ukraine to bring an end to the war.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry summoned Israel’s envoy for a reprimand over Israeli actions on the Temple Mount on Monday.

The Israeli ambassador was out of the country, so Israeli Deputy Ambassador Sami Abu Janeb will take part in the meeting.

Last week, Palestinians stockpiled rocks and fireworks in the al-Aqsa Mosque, launching them at police officers and at Jews praying at the Western Wall below the Temple Mount. Police entered the compound, making arrests and trying to quell the violence. The events occurred repeatedly in the ensuing days, and Palestinian attacks on Israelis in and around the Old City of Jerusalem increased.

Jordan’s royal family is the custodian of holy sites in Jerusalem, and the Jerusalem Islamic Wakf that administers the al-Aqsa Mosque is a Jordanian authority. When Israel and Jordan made peace in 1994, Israel committed to “respect the present special role of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Muslim Holy shrines in Jerusalem.”

Jordan’s King Abdullah II told his government to work to “stop Israeli escalations,” and called on Israel to respect the “historical and legal status-quo at the al-Aqsa Mosque/al-Haram al-Sharif and cease all illegal and provocative measures that violate it and could push toward further escalation.”

The Iron Dome missile-defense system intercepted a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip toward Israel on Monday night, the first such attack in four months.

The incoming rocket siren was activated around 8:30 p.m. in the southern Israeli communities of Kissufim and Ein Hashlosha, which are located just across from the city of Khan Yunis.

The Eshkol Regional Council and Magen David Adom said there were no reports of injuries following the rocket attack.

Sirens were activated on Sunday afternoon in the town of Nahal Oz. The IDF later said the sirens were a false alarm. The last time that rockets were fired from the Hamas-ruled enclave was on January 1, when two rockets landed in the sea off the coast of Tel Aviv.

The rocket fire comes as tensions mount surrounding the Temple Mount as dozens of Palestinians have been injured and hundreds arrested following violent clashes with Israel Police.

(credit: ISRAEL POLICE)The international community, including Arab states that have normalized relations with Israel as well as Jordan, have been highly critical of the actions of Israeli security forces. Hamas and other groups in the Gaza Strip have warned that Jerusalem and the holy compound were a red line.

“Our Palestinian people are committed to holding to their rights, land and holy sites,” said Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. “All attempts to dominate al-Aqsa Mosque or change its Islamic identity will not succeed.”

Israeli officials understand that while Hamas is not interested in renewed conflict at this time, their major concern is that the violence might spiral and lead to other terrorist groups in the Strip launching rockets into Israel, thereby dragging the country into yet another war.

Violence on the Temple Mount last year coupled with the cancellation of Palestinian elections led to Hamas firing seven rockets toward Jerusalem. That led to 11 days of deadly conflict in which more than 4,300 rockets were fired into Israel. That conflict was labeled Operation Guardian of the Walls by the IDF and Sword of Jerusalem by Hamas.

According to reports, Egypt, Qatar and the United Nations have been mediating between Israel and Hamas in order to calm tensions and prevent further violence.
