Hundreds of Arabs rioted on Monday night in several hotspots in the city of Lod, shooting fireworks at police officers, burning a synagogue and trying to set fire to a police station.

Jews who were defending their lives repelled the rioters by opening fire.

An Arab who was shot during the riots died of his wounds at Assaf Harofeh Hospital. Another Arab arrived at the hospital on his own, also suffering from gunshot wounds and in moderate condition.

The chairman of the Religious Zionist Party, MK Bezalel Smotrich, called on the Minister of Internal Security Amir Ohana and the police to send large forces to Lod. “I am warning once again, the events in Lod are out of control and the police response is far from sufficient. Riots in dozens of hotspots. A terrorist killed, which will, God forbid, escalate events.”

“The beit midrash of the mechina was set on fire, same with the new mosaic museum. An incited lot. If someone upstairs does not come to his senses immediately, this night will end in disaster,” Smotrich warned.

IDF responds: At least 3 Hamas terrorists killed

Israel retaliated to the unprovoked Hamas attack. It said it killed three Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip.

By David Isaac, World Israel News

The IDF struck the Gaza Strip following a rocket barrage targeting Jerusalem, Beit Shemesh and areas in southern Israel on Monday. According to Gaza reports, nine were killed. Israel says it killed three Hamas terrorists in an aerial attack.

The IDF released footage of the retaliatory strike. It also said Hamas will pay a heavy price for its unprovoked Monday attack.

Hamas fired seven rockets at Jerusalem and Beit Shemesh, a city located 30 kilometers west of Jerusalem. One rocket hit a settlement near the capital but no one was injured. An anti-tank missile was also fired at a civilian vehicle along the Gaza Strip. The driver escaped with light injuries.

Air raid sirens continue to sound in Israel’s south as of 8:30 p.m. Israelis have on average 15 seconds to get to shelter once sirens sound.

Hamas used as pretext for the attack Israeli actions in Jerusalem. Israeli police are working to restore calm after Palestinians rioted on the Temple Mount and in other parts of Jerusalem.

At 4:45 p.m. Hamas had issued Israel an ultimatum to remove all its forces from the Temple Mount. It launched its rocket attack at around 6:00 p.m.

A senior Hamas official told Kan News: “We are not looking for war but are willing to pay any price for Jerusalem and Al Aqsa.”

Joining Hamas is the smaller terror group, Islamic Jihad, which announced at 6:30 p.m. that it fired 30 rockets at Jewish communities in the south.

Israel has tightened security restrictions up to 40 kilometers from the Gaza Strip and is preparing for possible missile strikes in the center of the country. Schools in the south will be canceled tomorrow. Flight paths to and from Ben Gurion Airport were altered.

However, Jerusalem Day celebrations continued after a brief stoppage.

Israel’s annual Jerusalem Day was overshadowed by rocket sirens and explosions as the Hamas claimed responsibility for striking the country’s capital in what marks further escalation with the militant group.

The rocket barrage towards Jerusalem and surrounding areas started just a few minutes following the expiration of an “ultimatum” by Hamas, which called for the withdrawal by the Israeli police from several areas in eastern Jerusalem and for freeing Palestinian prisoners. Marchers who participated in the Jerusalem Day flag parade were forced to ran for cover and continued the celebration shortly after.

According to Israel Defense Forces, a barrage of rockets was also being fired toward southern Israel. The IDF said that it had detected seven rockets launched from the Gaza Strip at the Jerusalem area, at least one of which was intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system. One house reportedly sustained damage, and there were no immediate reports of injuries.

“In Palestinian terrorism, an iron fist must be fought. Anyone who puts Israeli residents in shelters should know that he will regret it,” said Israel’s Defense Minister Naftali Bennett. “The Israeli government will take determined action.”

Fatah, Hamas Engaging in Violent Incitement to Stoke Flames of Jerusalem Violence: Watchdog Groups

As ongoing Palestinian mob attacks on Israeli security forces and Jewish civilians continue in Jerusalem, and rockets are fired at…

Hamas said it fired rockets towards Jerusalem in response to Israeli “crimes and aggression in the Holy City, and its harassment of our people in Sheikh Jarrah and Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

According to reports, a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip hit a house in the Judean hills. The IDF reported that an anti-tank missile was fired from Gaza toward Israel. As a result, an Israeli civilian in a nearby vehicle was lightly injured and evacuated to a hospital for further medical treatment.

According to Walla News, Israel’s security cabinet gave the IDF a green light to hit targets throughout the Gaza Strip.

“In the next few days, Hamas will feel the long arm of the [Israeli] army. It won’t take a few minutes, it will take a few days,” IDF Spokesperson Hidai Zilberman said.

Jerusalem has been the site of a number of days of violence as Palestinians clashed with Israeli police forces across the capital and around the Temple Mount ahead of the annual Jerusalem Day to celebrate the reunification of the city after the 1967 Six-Day War. This year the march coincides with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Violence had also erupted in recent days in response to the tension around the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of eastern Jerusalem, where a number of Palestinian families are set to be evicted in an ongoing court case.

“No country can allow its citizens to live under the threat of terrorism,” said leader of the Israeli opposition Yair Lapid. “Israel must act resolutely and forcefully and restore deterrence in the war against the enemies of Israel.”
