US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he would indefinitely extend the ceasefire with Iran, hours before it was set to expire, to allow the two countries to continue peace talks to end a war that has killed thousands of people and shaken the global economy.

Backing down from threats of new violence earlier in the day, Trump said in a statement he had agreed to a request by Pakistan, which has mediated peace talks in the seven-week-old war, “to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal.”

Trump’s announcement appeared to be unilateral, and it was not immediately clear whether Iran, or the US ally Israel, would agree to extend the ceasefire, which began two weeks ago. Trump also said he would continue the US Navy’s blockade of Iran‘s ports and shore, which Iran‘s leaders have called an act of war.

There was no immediate comment from Iran‘s most senior leaders, but Tasnim News Agency, affiliated with Iran‘s Revolutionary Guards, said Iran had not asked for a ceasefire extension and repeated threats to break the US blockade by force. An adviser to Iran‘s lead negotiator, the speaker of parliament, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, said Trump’s announcement carried little weight.

“Trump’s ceasefire extension is certainly a ploy to buy time for a surprise strike,” Mahdi Mohammadi, the parliament speaker’s adviser, said in a statement on social media, calling the US blockade an ongoing military aggression. “The time for Iran to take the initiative has come.”

Trump said he would extend the ceasefire until Iran‘s “proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other.”

It was the latest instance of Trump backing down at the 11th hour from his repeated threats to bomb every power plant in Iran. United Nations Secretary General António Guterres and others have condemned the threats, noting international humanitarian law forbids attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.

Trump, who with Israel launched the war on Iran on Feb. 28, said he decided to extend the ceasefire because “the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so,” a reference to US-Israeli assassinations of some of the country’s leaders, including the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has been succeeded by his son.

The US blockade became a sticking point as the two countries wavered this week on whether to send negotiators to a second round of peace talks in Islamabad, the Pakistani capital.

The ceasefire extension came only a few hours after Trump had said he was not inclined to continue the temporary truce and the US military was “raring to go.” He told CNBC in an interview that the US was in a strong negotiating position and would end up with what he called “a great deal.”

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked Trump in a statement on social media for “graciously accepting our request to extend the ceasefire to allow ongoing diplomatic efforts to take their course.”

“I sincerely hope that both sides will continue to observe the ceasefire and be able to conclude a comprehensive ‘Peace Deal’ during the second round of talks scheduled at Islamabad for a permanent end to the conflict,” Sharif wrote.

It was not clear when, or if, that second round of talks would be scheduled.

Israel, Argentina establish Judeo-Christian ‘Isaac Accords’

Argentina’s President Javier Milei and Israel’s prime minister sign Isaac Accords, aimed at bringing together Israel and the Western Hemisphere on the basis of shared “Judeo-Christian tradition.”

By World Israel News Staff

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Argentine President Javier Milei on Sunday announced the launch of the “Isaac Accords,” a new framework aimed at expanding cooperation between Israel, Argentina and other countries across the Americas.

According to the announcement, the initiative is meant to bring together “like-minded nations” rooted in the “Judeo-Christian tradition” and committed to “defending freedom, democracy, and the struggle against terrorism, antisemitism, and drug trafficking.”

The framework is expected to focus heavily on security coordination.

The two governments said participating countries will work to increase cooperation against terrorist groups, with particular emphasis on “Iran’s attempts to expand its terrorist network and presence throughout the Western Hemisphere.”

The launch ceremony was attended by US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee.

The initiative was described as drawing inspiration from President Donald Trump’s “Abraham Accords,” with the statement saying ties between the United States, Israel and Argentina “have never been stronger.”

At the event, Netanyahu said he hopes the new framework can grow beyond the initial partnership.

“Just as we had the model of the Abraham Accords here for countries in the region interested in advancing peace, and prosperity and security, the same can happen vis-à-vis our common goals, our common values in Latin America and it begins right here,” he said.

“This is our first step,” Netanyahu added.

Milei called the launch “a historic moment for our nations.”

“It will not only strengthen the relationship between Argentina and Israel, united by shared values, but also represents a step toward a freer and more prosperous hemisphere,” he said.

Huckabee also praised the partnership at the signing ceremony.

“I stand here alongside two of President Trump’s greatest allies,” he said. “I know of no leaders he respects more or with whom he has a closer personal bond.”

Alongside the accords announcement, Netanyahu and Milei also unveiled a new direct scheduled flight route between Israel and Argentina.

The governments said the route is intended to deepen economic ties, facilitate business activity, boost trade and investment, and expand tourism and travel access between Israel and Latin America.

Netanyahu highlighted the aviation breakthrough in his remarks.

“We have just passed the unimaginable free navigation, direct flight between Israel and Argentina, and we cut through all layers of bureaucracy,” he said.

There is “more to come,” he added.

A series of memoranda of understanding and agreements were also signed during the meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem.

They included an agreement on counterterrorism cooperation between the two foreign ministries, a memorandum on cooperation in artificial intelligence, and an amended aviation protocol updating a 2017 air services agreement between the two countries.

The revised aviation arrangement is meant to ease air links by allowing multiple designated carriers, setting rules for tariffs, and creating enforcement tools aimed at protecting competition.

US President Donald Trump announces that the US has taken custody of an Iranian cargo ship that attempted to pass a blockade that Washington has been maintaining around Iranian ports.

“Today, an Iranian-flagged cargo ship named TOUSKA — nearly 900 feet long and weighing almost as much as an aircraft carrier — tried to get past our naval blockade, and it did not go well for them,” Trump claims in a Truth Social post.

“The US Navy guided missile destroyer USS SPRUANCE intercepted the TOUSKA in the Gulf of Oman, and gave [it a] fair warning to stop,” Trump continues. “The Iranian crew refused to listen, so our navy ship stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engineer room. Right now, US Marines have custody of the vessel.”

“The TOUSKA is under US Treasury sanctions because of [its] prior history of illegal activity. We have full custody of the ship, and are seeing what’s on board!” the US president adds.
