In January 2021, the ayatollahs were salivating over the expectation that the Biden administration would rejoin the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action Iran nuclear deal within months, on their terms.

In this scenario, they would have wiped out any leverage or gains by Israel, moderate Sunni countries and opponents of Iran in the US from the Trump years.

But none of this went as planned.

The Biden administration has been a tougher negotiator than expected, significant time has passed, and the trade wars between the West and Russia and China have left Iran to rethink whether any nuclear deal is in its interest.

True, during the negotiations Iran achieved most of its main objectives, with the US consenting to allow the Islamic Republic to maintain hundreds of new advanced centrifuges in storage instead of having to destroy them.

(credit: EU DELEGATION IN VIENNA/HANDOUT VIA REUTERS)This is the most crucial change from the JCPOA because it means that the new deal would really only buy a few months before Iran could break out to a nuclear weapon, if Tehran made the political decision to do so.

In addition, the ayatollahs have succeeded in sidelining the Biden administration’s hope to improve the JCPOA by filling some of the holes related to its expiration in 2025 and 2030, Iran’s ballistic missile program, inadequate International Atomic Energy Agency supervision of military Iranian nuclear facilities, and Iran’s aggressive behavior in the region.

Despite these achievements, Iran is now holding up consummating the nuclear deal, allegedly because the US has not agreed to delete the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from its Foreign Terrorist Organizations list.

One possible reason why Iran would hold up the deal over this symbolic technicality could be because it never wanted a deal in the first place, and is simply trying to buy time for clandestine nuclear weapons activities.

Another possibility is that Iran does intend to eventually conclude a deal, but would still like to buy some time for clandestine nuclear activities, which could help it at a later potential breakout date.

A third possibility is that Iran wanted a deal in January 2021 based on the balance of world power at the time.

However, it might now view things differently.

In January 2021 Iran faced four years of the Biden administration and potentially even eight years in which a new nuclear deal could enable its economy to thrive.

There also did not seem to be a scenario in which Iran’s economy could thrive without Western support.

Yet in May 2022 the Biden administration is looking weak, with many predicting that Biden will only be in office for another two-and-a-half years. And trade wars between the West on one side and Russia and China on the other have split the international economic regime, and created possibilities for Iran to try to rebuild its economy without Western support.

Finally, Iran’s bitter experience in which the JCPOA only provided much delayed economic benefits has made Iran question whether two-and-a-half years would be long enough for it to actually obtain any substantial economic benefits from a new deal.

Even such Iran hawks as former National Security Council chief Yaakov Amidror said in late 2016 that they were surprised how little foreign investment had returned to Tehran.

It turned out that even without global sanctions; many foreign investors were concerned about systematic corruption in Iran as well as the possibility that any investments could be messed up a couple of years down the line, should a more anti-Iran Republican president take over in 2024.

Israel has said since January 2021 that a return to the JCPOA would be a major mistake.

Jerusalem might now need to deal with the consequences of helping prevent a return to the nuclear deal, such as having to decide how to push Iran away from the nuclear threshold that it has been sitting on for approximately a year.

Following the deadly Elad attack, Israeli security officials extend the closure on West Bank and Gaza Palestinians until Sunday, the Defense Ministry says.

The decision came during a snap meeting of Israeli security chiefs to discuss responses to the terror attack, which has left three Israelis dead so far. Two others are in critical condition.

Defense Minister Benny Gantz vowed that the defense establishment “would exact a price for the terror attacks and the incitement,” without providing details.

The closure was put in place on Tuesday afternoon, ahead of Memorial Day and Independence Day, and was supposed to end overnight Thursday-Friday.

Sheba hospital neurosurgeon says attack victim admitted with ‘severe head injury’

Dr. Tzion Zibli, head of neurosurgery at Sheba Medical Center, said that a 20-year old man injured in the Elad attack has been admitted to his department.

The victim is fighting for his life, has a “severe head injury” and is en-route to surgery.

Early reports said the two suspected attackers used a firearm and an ax, but medics have said that all of the injuries appear to have been caused by a sharp weapon, and not by gunfire.

Another patient is in critical condition at Beilinson Medical Center in Petah Tikva.

Tor Wennesland, United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, condemns the deadly terror attack in Elad and blasts Palestinian terror groups for applauding the attack.

“Appalled by this evening’s terror attack in central Israel in which three Israelis were killed, and several others injured. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and I wish a speedy recovery to the wounded,” Wennesland says in a statement.

“It is deplorable that Hamas and others continue to glorify and encourage such attacks, which undermine the possibility of a peaceful future for both Palestinians and Israelis. All must condemn violence and stand up to terror,” he says.

US ambassador to Israel: Terror attacks must stop

United States Ambassador to Israel Thomas Nides calls the terror attack in Elad “a heartbreaking end” to the celebrations of Israel’s Independence Day.

“I share the grief of families of those murdered in the terrorist attack & wish speedy recovery to the wounded. This must STOP!” Nides writes on Twitter.

Police say Elad terrorists likely from West Bank

Police officials say their “working hypothesis” is that the terrorists who killed 3 and wounded several others in Elad are Palestinians from the West Bank.

The two suspects have not yet been apprehended or identified.

West Bank Palestinians have carried out a string of deadly attacks in recent months in Israel and the West Bank, and Arab Israelis carried out at least two attacks within Israel.

Lapid: ‘The joy of Independence day cut short in an instant’

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid responds to the Elad terror attack, which took place at the end of Independence Day, in the first public response from a senior leader in the coalition.

“The joy of Independence Day is cut short in an instant,” Lapid says.

“The murderous terror attack in Elad is terrifying to the heart and soul. Three murdered and another three wounded by lowly terrorists. I send condolences from the depth of my heart to the families that lost a loved one this evening, and pray with all of Israel for the safety of the injured.”

“We will not submit to terror. We will not let terrorists scare us. The security forces will catch the murderers and stand them on trial. We will continue to fight together for our independence and the safety of Israeli citizens.”

Terror groups praise Elad attack, but don’t take responsibility

Palestinian terror groups praise the terror attack that has left at least three Israelis dead and others wounded in the central city of Elad, although none immediately take responsibility.

The Hamas terror group calls the attack “a heroic operation,” saying it comes in response to Jewish Israelis visiting the Temple Mount holy site earlier today.

“Our people will continue their struggle and their defense of the Al-Aqsa Mosque with every means. Their blows will strike the Zionists and the settlers wherever they are,” says Hamas spokesperson Abd al-Latif al-Qanou.

In a recent speech, Hamas’s Gaza chief Yahya Sinwar threatened violent consequences should Israelis continue visiting the site. He also called on West Bank Palestinians to commit individual attacks against Israelis.

“This is the practical implementation of what the resistance warned: Al-Aqsa is a red line,” Hamas official Hazem Qasim says.

Islamic Jihad also praises the deadly attack as a “heroic operation.”

“For settler gangs to defile Al-Aqsa — this crosses red lines,” says senior terror group member Mohammad Hmeid.

Witness: ‘I heard screams: ‘Medic! medic!’

A witness to the attacks in Elad says he heard screaming while driving home from a store.

“I was in my car and suddenly I heard screams of ‘medic, medic!’” Netanel Birnbaum tells Channel 12.

“I stopped right away. There was a medic with me who just ran to the area and started doing resuscitation to a person.”

Police put up roadblocks in search for suspects

Police say they launched a manhunt for the two suspects in the Elad attack, blocking off several roads in the area.

In a statement, police say a helicopter is being used to search for a vehicle that fled the scene.

Clashes broke out on Temple Mount between Palestinian rioters and Israel Police on Thursday morning, as Jewish visitors arrived at the holy site on Israel’s Independence Day after almost two weeks of the compound’s closure to Jews.

During the visits, dozens of rioters threw stones and other items at police officers securing the visits, lightly injuring one, the Jerusalem police spokesperson said in a statement.

Rioters were pushed back from the Jewish visitors and withdrew to one of the Temple Mount’s mosques, and from there continued to throw objects. The last few weeks have seen rioters barricade themselves inside the mosques and throw firebombs, stones, and fireworks from the structure.

“Anyone who disturbs the order, incites violence, riots and acts of violence of any kind — will be treated harshly and with zero tolerance,” said the spokesperson.

Police warned against incitement and false information spreading on social media, saying that its aim was to escalate violence. The police also clarified that there has been no change in policy on the restrictions placed on Jewish Israelis and tourists in relation to prayer.

(credit: REUTERS/AMMAR AWAD)After the intention to open the Temple Mount for entry to Jews was announced on Tuesday, Palestinian terrorist organizations renewed threats against Israel, which have been made periodically as Ramadan riots have persisted. The riots were sparked in large part over rumors and panic that Jews were seeking to engage in worship and Passover sacrificial practices on the Mount, or to take full religious control over the Temple Mount.

Hamas Spokesperson Abdel Latif Al-Qanou threatened that Jewish visitation to the holy site would serve as a “detonator for a new confrontation.”

After Palestinian media reported that prayer at the al-Aqsa mosque was being limited due to the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Western Wall, which is a retaining wall for the compound, Palestinian Islamic Jihad said that such action was a red line and that Israel would be responsible for the consequent situation.

“Settler calls to storm Al-Aqsa are a war against our people and our sanctities, and we will not hesitate to defend our Aqsa and our sanctuaries,” said the terrorist organization.

Hamas announced on Wednesday that a delegation of senior members would be discussing the situation on the Temple Mount with Russia. It was reported by pro-Hezbollah Lebanese Al-Mayadeen TV that Hamas representatives would meet with Chechen Republic head Ramzan Kadyrov and possibly Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
