Iran will build new nuclear reactor: official

BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:00 A.M.) – The spokesman for the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Parliament, Abul Fadl Amoui, announced that his country is working on designing a nuclear reactor similar to the Arak heavy water reactor.

“During today’s meeting of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, they discussed how to implement the Strategic Procedure Law to abolish the embargo and protect the rights of the people,” Amoui said in an interview with the Fars News Agency.

He continued, “This meeting was attended by the Assistant Head of the Atomic Energy Organization and Assistant Foreign Minister Behrouz Kamalandi, who gave an explanation on how to implement the various provisions of this law.”

“The Atomic Energy Organization is working at the present time, according to a timetable, to design a reactor similar to the Arak heavy water reactor, before making updates to it,” he said.

He added that Kamalandi confirmed during the meeting that the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs made it clear in its international contacts that the “strategic procedure to end the embargo” law had passed all its legal stages, stressing that “we will not allow foreign parties to violate this law.”

On Sunday, Iran revealed that it would increase its uranium enrichment, unless the United States ended its economic blockade and sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

However, it is highly unlikely that the Trump administration will agree to lift the sanctions against Iran; they will have to wait until Joe Biden is inaugurated.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards unveiled on Friday one of its “strategic missile bases” located on the “shores of the Persian Gulf,” according to the corps’ Sepahnews website.

Iranian state television showed underground tunnels and depots of missiles in the south of the country near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

“Our logic in defending the territorial integrity, the independence of the country, and the achievements of the Islamic Revolution is strengthening,” said the top commander of the Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Hossein Salami, according to Mehr News. “What you see today is one of several IRGC Naval Strategic Missile facilities.”

According to the report, Salami also said “the long-range missiles have pinpoint precision with high destructive power and they are capable of resisting against enemies’ electronic warfare equipment.”

Also on Friday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reiterated Iran’s position that the missile program was developed to “defend” the country against any threats from outside.

The comments and unveiling appeared to be part of a series of moves this week aimed at increasing Iran’s leverage before Joe Biden becomes US president on January 20.

Biden has vowed to re-enter the nuclear agreement if Iran first returns to compliance with it. He has also expressed a desire to negotiate a “longer and stronger” follow-up agreement that would extend the time-limited provisions on the JCPOA, while also addressing Iran’s missile program and curbing the influence of Tehran’s regional proxies. Iran has rejected any such negotiations.

Iran resumed enriching uranium to 20 percent this week, well in excess of the threshold set out in its landmark 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

In 2018, US President Donald Trump withdrew from the JCPOA and reinstated US sanctions that had been lifted against Iran, plunging it into recession.

The decision to enrich uranium to 20% — below the 90% required for an atomic bomb, but a relatively short technical step from that benchmark — was not initiated by President Hassan Rouhani’s relatively moderate-reformist government, but by parliament, which conservatives have dominated since last year.

After the assassination of top scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh on November 27, which Tehran blamed on Israel, deputies approved a bill requiring Iran to resume uranium enrichment to 20% purity, as it had been doing before the JCPOA, and to stock 120 kilograms (265 pounds) of uranium each year.

Mahmoud Habbash, an adviser to Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas on religious and Islamic affairs, said on Wednesday that the “settlers’ calls” for the demolition of the Dome of the Rock mosque on the Temple Mount pose a serious danger.

The statement came after the PA’s official news agency Wafa reported that Jewish organizations that support the construction of a Holy Temple on the Temple Mount have asked the Israeli government to submit a proposal to the Islamic Endowments Department in Jerusalem and the Jordanian government to demolish the Dome of the Rock and to build the Temple in its place.

Habbash said in a statement that the “settlers” who made these calls enjoy broad support from Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

He added that is forbidden to ignore these calls and that they must be responded to strongly by the Arabs, Muslims and the entire world.

Habbash is known for his inciting statements against Israel. In 2018, he compared Israel’s restrictions on access to the Al-Aqsa Mosque to Nazi methods.

In 2017, he blasted the security measures taken by Israel following a terror attack on the Temple Mount, saying they constitute a blatant violation of the conventions and decisions of international institutions regarding the status of Jerusalem and its holy sites.

Also that year, Habbash gave a sermon which was attended by Abbas himself, during which he warned the US against moving its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Doing so, Habbash said at the time, would be a “declaration of war”.
