Jerusalem and Riyadh said pushing for surgical strike on Iranian nuclear facilities

Israel and Saudi Arabia have been urging the administration of US President Donald Trump to strike Iran ahead of the inauguration of the presumptive US President-elect Joe Biden, London-based Dar Al-Hayat reported Thursday.

According to the report, which cites unnamed US sources, the two nations seek a surgical US strike aimed at Tehran’s nuclear facilities.

The rationale behind the alleged push is to derail possible Iran outreach from the Biden administration, with President-elect stating an intention to rejoin the 2015 nuclear deal.

According to the report, the Israeli and Saudi officials also tried to persuade the United Arab Emirates to join the push for an Iran strike.

The UAE resisted such calls, however, wary of affecting its complex relations with the Islamic Republic, the report adds.

While Biden has indicated he wanted to rejoin the nuclear deal, earlier reports suggested his team was divided on whether the agreement would first have to be expanded.

In 2018, Trump withdrew the US from the accord, saying it did not go far enough and did not cover Iran’s regional aggression and ballistic missile development.

Meanwhile successor to assassinated Quds force chief threatens ‘severe revenge’ — which may come from within the United States

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s judiciary chief warned Friday that Qassem Soleimani’s killers will “not be safe on Earth,” as the Islamic Republic began marking the first anniversary of the top general’s assassination in a US strike.

Ebrahim Raisi, speaking at an event in Tehran to pay tribute to Soleimani, said not even US President Donald Trump, who ordered the strike, was “immune from justice.”

Soleimani was killed in a US drone strike at Baghdad airport on January 3, 2020, ratcheting up tensions between decades-old enemies the United States and Iran.

“They will witness severe revenge. What has come so far has only been glimpses” of it, Raisi told the gathering at Tehran University.

“Do not presume that someone, as the president of America, who appeared as a murderer or ordered a murder, may be immune from justice being carried out. Never,” he said. “Those who had a role in this assassination and crime will not be safe on Earth.”

The event was attended by Iranian officials, and speakers included representatives from allied regional countries and forces, namely Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen.

A separate event is expected to be held in the coming days in Kerman, Soleimani’s hometown where he is buried.

Soleimani headed the Quds force, the foreign operations arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Top Iranian authorities, including supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had previously said that all those involved in his killing would face retribution.

Days after Soleimani’s killing, Iran launched a volley of missiles at Iraqi bases housing US and other coalition troops, with Trump refraining from any further military response.

The Iranian leadership has called the strikes a “slap” and vowed that “severe revenge” awaits.

Soleimani’s successor, Esmail Ghaani, warned during Friday’s event that it may come from anywhere.

“It’s even possible that there are people inside your home [the United States] that will respond to your crime,” he said.

And the top commander of the Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Hossein Salami, said his country was fully prepared to respond to any US military pressure.

“Today, we have no problem, concern or apprehension toward encountering any powers. We will give our final words to our enemies on the battlefield,” Salami said, without mentioning the US directly.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have soared since 2018, when Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from the Iran nuclear deal and reimposed crippling sanctions.

The two sides have twice come to the brink of war since June 2019, especially following the killing of Soleimani.

‘Chances of a sudden, full-blown escalation are on the increase’

A resumption of aggression by the Shi’ite Lebanese terror group Hezbollah against targets in northern Israel is merely a matter of time, a senior Israel Defense Forces (IDF) official told the Hebrew-language Israel Hayom news site on Friday.

The official, who was not identified in the report, said that “There’s high probability that the northern border would see a resumption of full-blown hostilities. This requires us to prepare accordingly; the chances of a sudden escalation are on the increase.”

The statement comes days after a failed infiltration attempt by Hezbollah terrorists.

Last month Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah boasted of the group’s increased missile capabilities and said it was intending to avenge the death of its member in an alleged Israeli airstrike in Syria.

The tensions spiked in the summer after months of relative calm when Israel thwarted an infiltration attempt by up to five Hezbollah gunmen.

Israel reported an exchange of fire that forced the terrorists back into Lebanon and said it fired artillery across the heavily guarded border for defensive purposes.

The incident came a week after an alleged Israeli missile attack hit positions of Syrian regime forces and their allies south of Damascus on July 20, killing five, including a Hezbollah member.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Hezbollah was “playing with fire” and that Israel’s response to the border incursion would “be very strong.”
