US President Donald Trump urged Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa to sign the Abraham Accords with Israel during their meeting ahead of the GCC summit in Riyadh on Wednesday.

The US leader added that he is also looking to normalize relations with Sharaa. The meeting between the two comes one day after Trump said that the US was lifting sanctions on Syria.

Trump told the Syrian leader he has “a tremendous opportunity to do something historic in his country,” according to an official statement by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. Trump also urged Sharaa to “tell all foreign terrorists to leave Syria, deport Palestinian terrorists, help the US to prevent the resurgence of ISIS, and assume responsibility for ISIS detention centers in the northeastern parts of the country.”

Shaara affirmed his commitment to the 1974 disengagement with Israel, the White House statement continued, recognized the opportunities of Iranians leaving Syria, and expressed interest in joint US-Syrian efforts in combating terrorism and eliminating chemical weapons.

Sources told The Jerusalem Post that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was also present in the meeting, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan joined by video conference. Erdogan and the Saudi Crown Prince praised Trump for lifting the sanctions on Syria, Leavitt said.

Trump’s business deals in the Middle East

Trump’s first day of a four-day swing through the Gulf region was marked by lavish ceremony and business deals, including a $600 billion commitment from Saudi Arabia to invest in the US and $142 billion in US arms sales to the kingdom.

Later on Wednesday, Trump will fly to the Qatari capital Doha, where he will participate in a state visit with Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and other officials. Qatar, a key US ally, is expected to announce hundreds of billions of dollars in investments in the US.

US ally Israel has opposed sanctions relief for Syria, but Trump on Tuesday said that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Erdogan, who are both clos

The release of IDF soldier Edan Alexander from Hamas captivity in Gaza was carried out as part of broader understandings reached during recent meetings held in Doha, Qatar, the pro-Qatari newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported.

According to sources within Hamas and Egypt familiar with the negotiations, the understandings include the initiation of indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas, with the United States serving as the primary mediator.

The sources indicated that the talks will not be conducted under fire, and as part of the agreements, a ceasefire or pause is expected to take effect, lasting between three weeks and forty days. During this period, six hostages are expected to be released — two alive and four whose bodies will be returned to Israel — all holding American citizenship.

In addition, humanitarian corridors are expected to open to allow the delivery of aid to Gaza. According to the report, terror organizations will be required to prove that the food and medical supplies entering through these corridors are indeed being delivered to the Israeli hostages.

The report further states that Hamas will provide clear and updated statements regarding the medical condition of the living hostages in its custody.

Meanwhile, US State Department regional spokesman Michael Mitchell addressed American involvement in the process. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Mitchell said there is value in maintaining direct contact between the United States and Hamas, as it helps prevent misunderstandings and aids in assessing whether Hamas is serious about certain issues.

Mitchell added, “There is a strong possibility that the United States will continue along this path in order to achieve our goals — which are the release of all the hostages.”

In a historic first meeting in 25 years, US President Donald Trump meets Syria’s President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, after US lifts sanctions on Syria despite Israeli objections.

US President Donald Trump met Wednesday with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, shortly after a $10 million bounty on al-Sharaa’s head was lifted.

Al-Sharaa is still officially designated by the US as a jihadist terrorist.

According to the Turkish Anadolu news agency, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also attended the meeting, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan participated remotely.

This marks the first meeting between a US president and a Syrian president in 25 years and is seen as part of a broader normalization process for al-Sharaa, who was formerly a senior member of Al-Qaeda.

Trump explained the decision as part of his desire to give the “new Syria” a real and meaningful opportunity: “Syria has suffered enough disasters, wars, and killings for many years. Therefore, my administration has already taken the first steps toward restoring normal relations between the United States and Syria — for the first time in more than a decade.”

The Qatari newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had urged Trump not to lift the sanctions or support Syria’s stabilization, warning that a repeat of the events of October 7 could occur. However, Trump did not accept the request.

Senior Israeli officials have warned that al-Sharaa is deceiving the world and, under the guise of a suited diplomat, aims to establish an Islamist terror regime in Syria that could be no less dangerous than its predecessor.
