Talks held in Geneva between Iran, Britain, France, and Germany will see dialog continue regarding Tehran’s disputed nuclear program, Iran’s official news agency reported on Tuesday.

“The talks were serious, frank, and constructive. We discussed ideas involving certain details in the sanctions-lifting and nuclear fields that are needed for a deal,” Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister for international and legal affairs, wrote on X on Monday.

“Sides concurred that negotiations should be resumed,d and to reach a deal, all parties should create and maintain the appropriate atmosphere. We agreed to continue our dialog,” he added.

The talks held on Monday followed earlier discussions in November. At that time, an Iranian official told Reuters that finalizing a roadmap with Europeans would “put the ball in the US court to revive or kill the nuclear deal.”

In 2018, the US, led by then-President Donald Trump, exited Iran’s 2015 nuclear pact with six major powers and reimposed harsh sanctions on Iran.

Pushing the limits

That prompted Tehran to violate the pact’s nuclear limits with moves such as rebuilding stockpiles of enriched uranium, refining it to higher fissile purity, and installing advanced centrifuges to speed up output.

Indirect talks between US President Joe Biden’s administration and Tehran to try to revive the pact have failed.

Trump has vowed to return to the policy he pursued in his previous term that sought to wreck Iran’s economy to force the country to negotiate a deal on its nuclear program, ballistic missile program, and regional activities.

hostage deal could be announced on Tuesday if there are no last-minute surprises, sources familiar with the matter told The Jerusalem Post.

Meetings are set to be held during the day in Qatar to finalize the deal.

On Monday, a source told the Post that a three-phased plan to release the hostages held in Hamas captivity had been reached, with the parties awaiting Hamas’s response.

The deal was reportedly achieved after a “breakthrough” in negotiations attended by teams of both US President Joe Biden and US President-elect Donald Trump.

Pivotal hours

“The next 24 hours will be pivotal to reaching the deal,” an official said of the draft.

“The hostage deal outline is clear, and Israel has come a long, long way,”  an Israeli official told the Post.

“We are moving forward slowly and carefully. We hope that Hamas will stop with its refusals,” the official added.

This is a developing story.

Israel has submitted a plan to Doha mediators detailing Israeli presence in the Gaza Strip during and after the various phases of a potential hostage-ceasefire deal, Al-Quds Al-Arabi reports.

London-based Qatari news outlet says Israel has requested a buffer zone of around a kilometer and a half along the Gazan border that will remain under Israeli control. Previously a 300 meter area had been considered a buffer zone – while there was no Israel Defense Forces presence there, there was an understanding that troops would fire on those who entered.

The report says agreement has been reached on the various areas from which the IDF will withdraw in the first and second phases of the deal, noting that the cautious optimism from the United States stems from the fact that the current formulation for an agreement would see all hostages and agreed-upon Palestinian prisoners released in the first two stages.

The report says topics still under discussion include the number of Palestinian prisoners to be released and where those serving severe sentences would be released to. Israel has said it needs to know how many of the hostages are alive before it agrees to a figure.

However, the outlet says that agreements have been reached on the management of humanitarian aid within the Strip.
