Turkey will ask the UN Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to verify Israel’s possession of nuclear weapons, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday.

Erdogan stressed that Turkey will not allow the issue of nuclear weapons and atomic bombs, whose existence is denied by Israeli ministers, to be forgotten, state news agency Anadolu reported.

He said: “Israel, tell whether you have an atomic bomb or not. [It] can’t say. But look, we say it. Israel, you have the atomic bomb.”

He added: “We will take initiatives both before the UN Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on this issue, which threatens the security of the entire region, including Turkey.”

Israeli Minister of Heritage Amihai Eliyahu’s had remarked earlier this month about the option of launching a nuclear strike on the Gaza Strip. The Israeli minister, when asked in an interview about a hypothetical option of dropping a nuclear bomb on the Gaza Strip, said: “That’s one way.”

At the time, the head of Iran’s atomic energy organisation Mohammad Eslami considered the minister’s statement as amounting to a de facto admission that Israel does possess nuclear weapons.

Erdogan went on to reiterate his claim that Israel was a “terrorist state”: “We need to know this once and for all. Israel is a terrorist state. There is no need to hesitate to say this. This is the truth we know. This is the case.”

“We cannot and will not tolerate the policy of the State of Israel, which has grown by constantly occupying, seizing land and massacring the oppressed, to render Gaza uninhabited,” Erdogan said.

“The attacks, in which more than 13,000 of our Palestinian brothers were martyred, have once again revealed the true face, intention and purpose of Israel and its supporters. In this regard, it is very important that the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Israeli rulers are not left without sanctions,” Erdogan stressed.

As for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Erdogan said he must be referred to the International Criminal Court. “Netanyahu is a goner. Even the Israeli people no longer support Netanyahu.”

Netanyahu had slammed Erdogan last week for labeling Israel a “terror state” by saying: “He calls Israel a terror state, but in his actions he supports the terror state of Hamas. He himself shelled Turkish villages within the borders of Turkey — we will not accept his preaching.”

Arab and Muslim ministers called on Monday for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, as their delegation visited Beijing on the first leg of a tour to push for an end to hostilities and to allow humanitarian aid into the devastated Palestinian enclave.

The delegation, which is set to meet officials representing each of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, is also piling pressure on the West to reject Israel’s justification of its actions against Palestinians as self-defense.

The officials holding meetings with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi on Monday are from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Indonesia, Palestine and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, among others.

“We are here to send a clear signal: that is we must immediately stop the fighting and the killings, we must immediately deliver humanitarian supplies to Gaza,” said Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.

Calling for an investigation on ‘crimes committed by Israel’

The extraordinary joint Islamic-Arab summit in Riyadh this month also urged the International Criminal Court to investigate “war crimes and crimes against humanity that Israel is committing” in the Palestinian territories.

Saudi Arabia has sought to press the United States and Israel for an end to hostilities in Gaza, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom’s de facto ruler, gathered Arab and Muslim leaders to reinforce that message.

About 240 hostages were taken during Hamas’s deadly cross-border rampage into Israel on Oct. 7, which prompted Israel to invade the Gaza Strip with the intention of eradicating the Hamas terror group.

Gaza’s Hamas-run government said at least 13,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli bombardments since then, including at least 5,500 children.

Israeli ambassador to Beijing Irit Ben-Abba told foreign reporters at a briefing on Monday that she hoped there would not be “any statements from this visit about a ceasefire, now is not the time.”

She said that Israel hoped that the delegation would talk about hostages captured by Hamas “and call for their immediate release without preconditions,” adding that the parties involved should talk together about Egypt’s “role in facilitating humanitarian assistance.”

Chinese officials refer to Arab and Muslim world as ‘brothers, friends’

China’s Wang said Beijing was a “good friend and brother of Arab and Muslim countries,” adding it has “always firmly supported the just cause of the Palestinian people to restore their legitimate national rights and interests.”

Since the start of hostilities, China’s foreign ministry has repeatedly stopped short of condemning Hamas, instead calling for de-escalation and for Israel and Palestine to pursue a “two-state solution” for an independent Palestine.

Since the end of China’s nearly three years of COVID lockdowns, Xi has launched a diplomatic push aimed at countering the United States and its allies, who he says seek to contain and suppress his country.

Beijing has deepened alliances with non-Western led multilateral groups such as the BRICS bloc of nations while strengthening ties with countries in the Middle East and the Global South.

On Monday, Wang added China will work to “quell the fighting in Gaza as soon as possible, alleviate the humanitarian crisis and promote an early, comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the Palestinian issue.”

China’s special envoy on the Middle East, Zhai Jun, has engaged officials from Israel and the Palestinian Authority – which governs in the occupied West Bank – as well as the Arab League and EU in the last year to discuss a two-state solution and recognition for Palestine at the United Nations.

Israeli cargo ship hijacked by Iran-backed terrorists

Iranian-backed Houthi rebels seize Israeli-linked cargo ship in the Red Sea.

Yemenite terrorists operating in the Red Sea hijacked an Israeli-linked cargo vessel Sunday.

The ship, Galaxy Leader, was seized by members of the Iranian-backed Houthi rebel movement, which has been engaged in a years-long war with the government of Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

Following the Hamas invasion of Israel last month, the Houthis have also attacked Israel repeatedly, launching missiles and unmanned aircraft towards the southern Israeli port city of Eilat.

According to a statement by the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office Sunday evening, the 25 crew members of the Galaxy Leader are Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Filipino, and Mexican nationals, with no Israeli citizens on board the Bahamas-flagged vessel.

Israel condemned the seizure as an “Iranian attack against an international vessel,” while downplaying the vessel’s ties to Israel.

“The ship, which is owned by a British company and is operated by a Japanese firm, was hijacked with Iran guidance by the Yemenite Houthi militia,” the Prime Minister’s Office said.

“This is another act of Iranian terrorism and constitutes a leap forward in Iran’s aggression against the citizens of the free world, with international consequences regarding the security of the global shipping lanes.”

However, the British company which owns the Galaxy Leader, Ray Car Carriers, was founded by Abraham Ungar, one of the wealthiest businessmen in Israel.

Ungar confirmed that he is aware of the ship’s seizure, but declined to comment, telling The Associated Press he was waiting to receive details of the incident.

In 2021, a ship linked to Ungar suffered an explosion while passing through the Gulf of Oman. Israel attributed the explosion to an attack by Iran.
