Two rockets launched from the Gaza Strip at southern Israel shortly before midnight on Thursday were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system, the military said, hours after terror groups threatened to respond to a deadly raid in the West Bank earlier in the day.

Incoming rocket sirens sounded in the southern coastal city of Ashkelon, as well as in its industrial zone, and the nearby towns of Zikim and Karmia.

Footage showed Iron Dome interceptor missiles exploding in the air.

The Israel Defense Forces said both rockets were downed by the air defense system.

There were no reports of injuries or damage.

The rocket fire came following the deaths of nine Palestinians during an IDF raid against a Palestinian Islamic Jihad cell in the northern West Bank city of Jenin Thursday morning.

Both Islamic Jihad and the Hamas terror group that rules the Gaza Strip threatened to hit back over the deaths.

A senior officer told reporters after the raid that the IDF was “ready and prepared for any scenario,” including possible rocket fire from the Gaza Strip, in response to the deadly clashes.

Over the past year, Islamic Jihad has launched rockets at Israel in response to members being killed or arrested in the West Bank.

Still, there was no immediate claim by any of the Gaza-based terror groups for the rocket fire Thursday.

According to Israeli officials, the IDF had foiled a “ticking time bomb” in Jenin on Thursday after receiving “accurate intelligence” from the Shin Bet security agency about the cell’s hideout apartment in the camp.

Nine Palestinians — including several members of the Islamic Jihad cell, other gunmen, and at least one uninvolved civilian — were killed, and another 20 were wounded in the clashes.

The clashes on Thursday morning marked the deadliest Israeli raid in the West Bank in years.

Separately on Thursday afternoon, a Palestinian man was killed in clashes with Israeli troops in the town of a-Ram, north of Jerusalem, the PA Health Ministry said.

Tensions have recently soared in the West Bank as the IDF presses on with an anti-terror offensive mostly focused on the northern West Bank to deal with a series of attacks that left 31 people in Israel dead in 2022.

Jenin is widely seen by Israeli military officials as a hotbed of terrorist activity, and has been the focus of many of the raids.

The IDF’s operation has netted more than 2,500 arrests in near-nightly raids. It also left 171 Palestinians dead in 2022, and, as of Thursday, another 30 since the beginning of the year, many of them while carrying out attacks or during clashes with security forces, though some were uninvolved civilians.

Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for all violence emanating from the Strip and generally responds to rocket fire with airstrikes against the group regardless of who launched the attack.

The last time a rocket was fired from the coastal enclave toward Israel was on January 3, following Hamas threats to retaliate against National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir paying a visit to the flashpoint Temple Mount site, which houses the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The rocket failed to cross the border.

As many as 13 Palestinians in the Jenin refugee camp on Thursday were killed in an extended battle with the IDF which was trying to thwart planned terror attacks as well as to capture at least three known Islamic Jihad terrorists.

The operation was a joint one involving the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), the IDF and the police.

The IDF said that when it approached the residence where the three terrorists were known to be hiding out, two of them started running out of the residence while armed and were killed by IDF forces.

A third wanted terrorist willingly surrendered himself to be arrested, while a fourth armed Palestinian there attempted to engage Israeli security forces and was also killed.

IDF anti-explosive experts entered the residence and safely exploded two bombs that the terrorists had in their possession.

The IDF said that the three wanted terrorists had already participated in multiple attacks and were planning even more substantial attacks.

In addition to the IDF statement, social media reports put the number of killed Palestinians as high as 13 with reports that a surface to surface missile was used to destroy a whole group of around five terrorists who had pinned down part of the IDF unit.

There were also reports and video footage indicating that the IDF had tried to sneak into Jenin under the cover of using a refrigerator supply truck, but that some of the Palestinians found the truck suspicious and opened fire on it, blowing the cover.

IDF sources also said they were looking into reports that at least one elderly Palestinian female civilian had been accidentally killed during the extended firefight.

Palestinians strike down Israeli drone

There was also a video being shared on Arab social media channels showing that Palestinians shot down an IDF drone.

The incident occurred during the broader altercation.

The video of the drone being shot down shows it hovering above the refugee camp at around a height of 70-100 feet.

Several failed attempts to shoot it down can be heard in the background until after an additional shot, the drone suddenly falls straight down out of the sky and crashes into the ground.

No IDF personnel were harmed.

Four Palestinians were killed and several were wounded during clashes between Israeli troops and gunmen in the northern West Bank city of Jenin on Thursday morning, health officials said.

In a brief statement, the Israel Defense Forces said it was operating in the Jenin refugee camp. It said it would provide further details later.

The Kan public broadcaster said the troops sought to arrest a senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terror group member who was allegedly preparing an imminent major terror attack.

A local wing of the PIJ said its members had opened fire on the Israeli troops and detonated explosive devices in the area.

The Palestinian Authority Health Ministry in a statement said at least four Palestinians were killed, with several more seriously wounded.

The fatalities included an elderly woman, the ministry said.

One of the slain men was named as 24-year-old Saeb Essam Mahmoud Azriqi.

Palestinian media reports estimated that the toll would rise further.

Explosions and gunfire could be heard in footage published by Palestinian media outlets.

Another clip purported to show Palestinian gunmen shooting down a small IDF surveillance drone.
