It is something that Israel has said over and over again: Israel is not a party to any deal signed with Tehran – And if needed, Israel’s military will act against Iran.

If President Joe Biden’s speech on Wednesday evening wasn’t clear enough: Ukraine is on its own against the Russian bear. And if there’s anything Israel can learn from that, is that it also will find itself fighting alone should it ever find itself in a war against Iran.

Yes, Biden said that he will impose strong sanctions on Russia and will provide Ukraine with humanitarian aid; yes the United States will deploy additional troops to neighboring NATO countries. But no, US troops will not fight against Russian troops for Ukraine.

No US soldier will die for Ukraine.

And no US soldier will die for Israel.

It is that clear. And while Israel has always known that, Biden made it especially clear on Wednesday.

Biden sounded angry and frustrated during his speech where he said that Russia’s invasion “is a dangerous moment for all of Europe, for freedom around the world. Putin has committed an assault on the very principles that uphold global peace.”

But, with all due respect, Biden waved the Western white flag and lost American deterrence against Russia -as well as Iran and China – countries that only respect leaders who show true power and strength.

America’s deterrence, at least in the Middle East, was tremendously weakened following its chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan earlier this year. Washington’s response to Moscow’s invasion further diminished its deterrence around the globe.

The invasion of Ukraine and the Western response may also bring Russia closer to Iran at a sensitive time in the negotiations in Vienna regarding Tehran’s nuclear program.

Though Russia and Israel both have the shared goal of removing Iranian forces from Syria, where they have entrenched themselves during the country’s civil war, Iran and its proxies might take the opportunity while Moscow is occupied in Eastern Europe to increase its aggressive moves in Syria – be it an increase in smuggling weapons to Hezbollah or even launching more unmanned aerial vehicles into the Jewish state.

With the West focused on Ukraine, Iran might also see an opening to accelerate its nuclear program despite the ongoing negotiations.

And that is something that Jerusalem will not accept. It is something that Jerusalem has said over and over again: Israel is not a party to any deal signed with Tehran. And if necessary, Israel’s military will act against Iran and prevent it from becoming a nuclear threshold state.

Even if Washington doesn’t like it.

Over the decades the security partnership between the two allies has only gotten stronger. The intelligence sharing, the joint military drills, the joint missile defense programs and other technological advancements have only increased between America and Israel.

In the past, there have been discussions surrounding a possible defense treaty between the two long-standing allies, but nothing has ever been signed because of how it might constrain Israel’s freedom of action.

And, while Israel appreciates the strong relationship and military benefits it has with the Americans, it is seen as a partner who can take care of its own needs without help from US troops unless it was under great duress.

Washington and Jerusalem also have an agreement that would see the US come to assist Israel with missile defense in times of war should the Jewish state request it.

Though close friends and tight allies, at the end of the day, Israel and the United States have different interests. Each is going to do what is in their best interest – even if that means doing it alone.

The IDF has watched and will continue watching the battle for Ukraine, as well as the reaction by the West. It has understood that in the new world order, America is no longer the military superpower that will come to the world’s aid.

Israel will not ask American troops to fight its wars. The IDF has fought its own battles and will do so in the future.

No matter the cost.

Russia denounces Israel’s sovereignty over Golan Heights

“Russia doesn’t recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights that are part of Syria,” said Russia’s Dmitry Polyanskiy.

By JNS.org and World Israel News Staff

At a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday where “Israel apartheid” was the focus rather than urgent global issues, Russia’s envoy said Moscow considers the Golan Heights to be a part of Syria.

“Russia doesn’t recognize Israel’s sovereignty over Golan Heights that are part of Syria,” Deputy Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy said in a special debate devoted to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Israel captured the Golan during the 1967 Six-Day War, when the Jewish state was threatened with annihilation by the surrounding Arab countries and won a stunning victory in a war of defense.

Israel annexed the Golan in 1981. Former President Trump officially recognized the Golan as Israeli territory during his tenure.

“We are concerned over Tel Aviv’s announced plans for expanding settlement activity in the occupied Golan Heights, which directly contradicts the provisions of the 1949 Geneva Convention,” the Russian Mission tweeted.

“Russia doesn’t recognize Israel’s sovereignty over Golan Heights that are part of Syria,” he said.

These were Russia’s first comments about Israel in the hours since the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement voicing support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity on Wednesday following the Russian invasion.

Israel’s initial statement did not mention Russia by name, apparently in an effort not to anger Moscow, which has allowed Israel to operate with a large degree of freedom in its attacks on Iranian targets in Syria.

On Thursday, however, Israel clearly denounced Russia, calling the attack on Ukraine a “grave violation.”

Meanwhile, at the Security Council meeting, the Palestinian Authority ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour used the occasion to slam Israel, notably wearing a mask printed with the words “End Apartheid.”

Israel condemns Russian attack on Ukraine

“Israel condemns the attack, and is ready and prepared to provide humanitarian assistance to the citizens of Ukraine,” said Yair Lapid.

Israel condemned Russia for attacking Ukraine on Thursday morning, hours after the invasion began.

“The Russian attack on Ukraine is a serious violation of the international order,” Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said. “Israel condemns the attack, and is ready and prepared to provide humanitarian assistance to the citizens of Ukraine.”

The unequivocal message came a day after Jerusalem released a message supporting Ukraine’s “territorial integrity and sovereignty” without mentioning Russia.

Lapid added that “Israel is a country that has experienced wars, and war is not the way to resolve conflicts. The first hours and days of any war are also the last time you can still stop and return to the negotiating table, mediated by world powers, to settle disputes peacefully.”

The foreign minister mentioned Israel’s “deep, long-lasting and good relations with Russia and Ukraine,” as well as the thousands of Israelis and hundreds of thousands of Jews in both countries, whose safety is at the top of his considerations.

Foreign Ministry, Nativ and Jewish Agency personal “are risking their lives to continue to provide assistance and help to every Israeli and every Jew,” he said.

Lapid also called on all Israelis in Ukraine to go to border crossings near Lviv, in Ukraine’s west, and leave the country.

Senior EU officials welcomed Lapid’s statement on the Russian invasion into Ukraine.

Israeli diplomats were stationed at crossings on Ukraine’s western border to help Israelis evacuate by land on Thursday, following Russia’s attack on the country and the closure of its airspace.

An estimated 7,000-8,000 Israelis remain in Ukraine, and the Israeli embassy asked that those who have not yet done so register on its website (https://survey.gov.il/ru/israelinuk) to receive updates.

Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine Michael Brodsky said that Israel “is asking Israelis to reach the border crossing with Poland independently.

“We are prepared, on the Polish side, to accept Israelis and help them fly to Israel,” Brodsky told KAN.

Israeli embassies sent representatives to the Medyka crossing with Poland, the Vysne Nemescke crossing with Slovakia, the Zahony crossing with Hungary, the Siret crossing with Romania and the Planca crossing with Moldova.

The Israeli Embassy in Ukraine officially moved on Tuesday night to Lviv, near the western border, to be farther from the more intense warzone in the east and to help with evacuations.

Though there have been reports of attacks on Lviv, as well, the embassy planned to stay, as of Thursday afternoon. However, they have an emergency plan to evacuate to Poland if necessary.

The embassy has received hundreds of phone calls, Brodsky said, but “we are staying here at the moment,” Brodsky added.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has been in consultations all morning and will lead an inter-ministerial discussion of the situation in Ukraine in the afternoon. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid held a situation assessment meeting on Thursday morning.

Hatzalah Jewish rescue services in Uman, Ukraine, the site of Hassidic pilgrimages to Rabbi Nachman of Breslev’s grave, said on Thursday that they “woke up under fire in the morning.”

“We prepared buses in advance, but there is chaos at the moment and no driver is willing to drive to the borders,” Hatzalah’s spokesman Shlomi Elisha said. “We are coordinating all the efforts to organize buses as much as we can.”

The buses will leave from Pushkina Square in Uman, with security and medical staff.
