Former Iranian FM warns Israel against future aggression

Mohammad Javad Zarif says Israel’s war with Iran was a “miscalculation,” warning future aggression will trigger Iranian self-defense.

Former Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif declared Sunday that Israel’s most recent war with Iran stemmed from “miscalculations,” warning that any future aggression would provoke Iranian self-defense, the Anadolu news agency reported.

He stressed that de-escalation would ultimately be “best for them”.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Doha Forum 2025, Zarif claimed that Israel underestimated Iran’s resilience when the conflict resumed.

“I think Israelis entered this aggression against us based on miscalculations and at the end of the day, they found out that the resistance of the people of Iran will prevent them from achieving their objectives, and that is what ended the war,” he stated.

Zarif emphasized that Iran has no interest in pursuing hostilities but is prepared to respond if attacked.

“Israel knows that Iran is capable of inflicting harm, but Iran is not interested in doing that other than in self-defense, so if they stop and forget about future aggressions, it’s best for them,” he said.

The remarks come after the 12-day conflict in June 2025, during which Israel struck Iranian military and nuclear facilities. The US later joined Israel and launched strikes on Iran’s key nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan.

US President Donald Trump later said that those nuclear sites were completely destroyed, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi subsequently admitted that “serious” damage was inflicted upon Iran’s nuclear sites.

Since the cessation of hostilities, Iranian officials have been vocal about the potential for renewed conflict.

In August, Iran’s Defense Minister, Aziz Nassirzadeh, declared that Tehran has developed more advanced missiles and is prepared for any future Israeli attack.

Speaking to state media, Nassirzadeh warned, “The missiles used in the 12-day war were manufactured… a few years ago.”

Before that, senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Yahya Rahim Safavi warned that another war with Israel or the United States remains likely, dismissing the current ceasefire as merely a temporary pause in a broader ongoing conflict.

Hamas will not disarm, give up its weapons, rule of the Gaza Strip, or permit external oversight in Gaza, including the International Stabilization Force (ISF), terror leader Khaled Mashaal said during a video address to an Istanbul conference titled “Pledge to Jerusalem” on Sunday.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry, sharing footage of Mashaal’s address, slammed the comments, calling them a “direct contradiction of the core terms of the peace plan itself.”

“Hamas is making a mockery of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan,” the ministry added.

Mashaal: Hamas’s weapons are the honor, pride of Palestinian nation

The ministry also shared a video snippet of Mashaal’s speech, where the terror leader said that “protecting the resistance project [Hamas’s terrorism] and the resistance’s weapons is our people’s right to defend itself. The resistance and its weapons are the honor and pride of the nation.”

Mashaal is believed to have been one of the key targets in Israel’s September strike in Doha, which attempted to target senior Hamas leadership based in the Qatari capital.

His brother, Mofid Abdel Kader Mashaal, was unexpectedly released from the US prison where he was held, Walla reported last December.

Egypt opposes division of the Gaza Strip

Egypt’s Foreign Minister says the role of the international force to be deployed in Gaza should be to maintain peace, not enforce it.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, voiced strong opposition to any discussion of dividing the Gaza Strip and called for the immediate implementation of the second phase of the ceasefire agreement.

“We have full confidence that President Trump and the American side will be involved in implementing the plan they outlined. This plan was prepared to be carried out in practice, and that is what we are working to advance through ongoing contact with the American side,” said Abdelatty.

He added that efforts are focused on moving without delay to implement the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, as there is no alternative, and it is imperative to prevent any party from obstructing or slowing down the plan’s execution.

Addressing the debate over an international force to be stationed in Gaza, Abdelatty said the main disagreements concern the precise definition of its authority: “The international force must be deployed in the Gaza Strip as soon as possible, to monitor the parties’ compliance with the ceasefire agreement.”

Later, he added, authority should be transferred to the Palestinian Authority, with the Palestinian police serving as “the sole body responsible for security.”
