The US called the move a significant step in helping combat threats to global security and Europe

The eastern European nation of Serbia said on Sunday that it is designating Lebanese paramilitary group Hezbollah a terrorist organization.

The US State Department immediately hailed the decision, calling it a “significant step” in helping combat threats to global security and the European continent.

Belgrade’s decision “is another significant step limiting this Iranian backed terrorist group’s ability to operate in Europe,” US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.

“This important action was announced as part of the historic commitments President Trump secured on a wide range of economic normalization issues between Serbia and Kosovo, coupled with the steps both nations are taking to help achieve peace in the Middle East,” the statement added.

Both the US and European Union, which Serbia is not a party to, have for years designated Hezbollah’s military-wing a terrorist organization.

But a number of European countries have hesitated in labeling its political apparatus with the same designation, which has significant representation and influence in Lebanon’s parliament.

“There is no doubt that the dominoes are falling on Hezbollah’s European operations, where it has continued to plot terrorist attacks, procure military technology, and raise much-needed funding,” the state department statement continues.

“The United States continues to call on the European Union and European nations to designate or ban Hezbollah in its entirety and recognize the reality that it is a terrorist organization root and branch with no distinction between its so-called ‘military’ and ‘political’ wings. We urge all countries in Europe and elsewhere to take whatever action they can to prevent Hezbollah operatives, recruiters, and financiers from operating on their territories.”

Serbia’s action comes just days after it announced it that it plans on moving its embassy to Jerusalem during a White House event where it agreed to sign separate agreements with Washington regarding the normalization of economic relations between itself and Balkan rival Kosovo.

JNS.org – Senior adviser to the president Jared Kushner said he thinks the announcement by Bahrain and Israel to normalize ties will lead to greater understanding and cooperation between the people of both countries.

Kushner, who has helped to spearhead the Trump administration’s Middle East peace efforts, told JNS in a conference call with reporters on Friday shortly after the deal was announced that “there’s not been a lot of interaction between Israel and Bahrain.”

“We’ve been able to broker this breakthrough at the leadership level, and now people will now get together at the working levels to get to know each other, to start talking through some of the opportunities,” he continued. “But I can tell you there’s just a rush of excitement from people to get to know each other, to work together and to seize common opportunities, so I think it’s going to be quite exciting going forward.”

Kushner said there will be more details be unveiled as “different agreements get executed, and all their sub-agreements that need to be done to facilitate the commerce and the trade.”

US President Donald Trump announced on Twitter on Friday that Israel and Bahrain agreed to establish “full diplomatic relations” as part of a “historic breakthrough to further peace in the Middle East.”

According to a joint statement, the two countries will “continue in their efforts in this regard to achieve a just, comprehensive and enduring solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and to enable the Palestinian people to realize their full potential.”

Last year, Kushner took part in the Trump administration’s unveiling of the economic component of its “Peace to Prosperity” vision at a June conference hosted by Bahrain.

In August 2019, Bahrain joined the US-led coalition against to protect shipping in the Gulf against Iran, becoming the first Gulf state to do so.

Along with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain opened its airspace last week to flights between Israel and the UAE.

This week, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain agreed to open their airspace to flights east from Israel.

With Friday’s announcement, Bahrain becomes the fourth Arab country after the UAE, Egypt and Jordan to establish diplomatic ties with Israel.

A reported Israeli airstrike on Friday targeted a missile production facility outside Aleppo, completely destroying one building and damaging another, according to satellite images released by a private Israeli intelligence firm.

“The attack intended to weaken the missile production in Syria, probably for Hezbollah, by harming its crucial elements,” says the company, ImageSat International, which specializes in satellite imagery analysis.

The strike, which was conducted in the predawn hours of Friday morning, targeted the Syrian regime’s missile factory in al-Safira, outside Aleppo, in northern Syria.

The Israel Defense Forces did not comment on the reported strikes, in accordance with its longstanding policy to neither confirm nor deny its activities in Syria.

The Aleppo region of northern Syria, near its border with Turkey, is an uncommon — but not unprecedented — site for reported Israeli airstrikes.

According to ImageSat, the two buildings that were hit in the strike “played a significant part in the missile production at the al-Safirah Missile Factory.”

Satellite images taken today showed at least some of the damage caused by the strike. One building, which ImageSat said likely contained explosives, was completely leveled in the attack. The second building sustained significant damage.
