Israel rains fire on Gaza terrorists, hitting rocket storage site

The Hamas terror organization is responsible for all events transpiring in the Gaza Strip,” the IDF said.

After Hamas fired rockets from the Gaza Strip at Israeli territory, IDF fighter jets and aircraft struck several Hamas military targets in the southern Gaza Strip overnight Sunday.

A terrorist compound used to store rocket ammunition belonging to the Hamas was hit.

The IDF says it views any terror activity against Israel with great severity and will continue operating against attempts to harm Israeli civilians or Israeli sovereignty.

“The Hamas terror organization is responsible for all events transpiring in the Gaza Strip and emanating from it, and will bear the consequences for terror activity against Israeli civilians,” the IDF said in a statement.

The latest attack marks several days of back and forth between Israel and the terror group which controls the Gaza Strip.

Early Sunday morning, a 58-year-old Israeli man was lightly injured by shrapnel when a Gaza rocket struck his patio in the city of Sderot.

There were also clashes along the border fence earlier on Saturday evening, something Israel hasn’t seen for some months. The IDF reports that dozens of rioters instigated clashes along the Gaza Strip security fence. The rioters burned tires, hurled explosive devices and grenades towards the security fence and attempted to approach it.

Hamas’ “harassment unit” will resume its operations on the Gaza border, according to reports. Israel can therefore expect riots and terror along its border to continue, including  tire burning and the throwing of explosives at Israeli communities along the border.

Hamas has promised to escalate tensions on the southern front as part of its bully tactics to ensure the continued flow of cash (recent Qatari aid ran out) and to force Israel to help with economic projects.

French President Emmanuel Macron urged fresh Middle East peace talks after Israel and the UAE agreed to normalize ties last week, AFP reports.

Taking to Twitter after a phone conversation with Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas, Macron said he told Abbas he was determined “to work for peace in the Middle East”.

“The resumption of talks to reach a fair solution that respects international law remains a priority,” he added.

Macron hailed the agreement announced by US President Donald Trump on Thursday as a “courageous decision” by the UAE, saying it showed Dubai’s “desire to contribute to the establishment of a just and lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians.”

The PA condemned the agreement, with senior leader Hanan Ashrawi tweeting: “May you never be sold out by your ‘friends.'”

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA said Abbas told Macron on Sunday that the UAE, “like any other country for that matter, cannot speak in the name of the Palestinian people”.

The Palestinian Authority refuses to “allow the Palestinian cause to be used as an excuse to justify normalization”, WAFA said.

It said Macron had invited Abbas to Paris to discuss the “Palestinian question”, with the Palestinian president agreeing to such a meeting “on the condition that a date is set quickly”

The Economy Ministry has estimated that the normalization of ties between Israel and the United Arab Emirates could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars a year to Israel in trade and investments, Channel 12 news reported Sunday.

Citing official figures based on various scenarios the ministry has reviewed in recent days, the station reports that exports to the UAE, which are currently at around $300,000 a year, could jump to an annual $300-$500 million.

UAE investments in Israel were predicted to amount to up to $350 million a year.

The areas of industry expected to gain the most were cyber industries, medical equipment, financial technology and communications, the report said.

The report also said the Arab-Israeli sector in particular was expected to benefit from investment by the Gulf state, though it did not provide further details.

In expectation of export deals and investments, the government has begun preparing frameworks to ease the process, the report said, without giving further details. Economy Minister Amir Peretz has ordered that work start to strengthen economic ties between the countries, beginning with the opening of a trade mission in the planned Israeli embassy in Abu Dhabi.

Israel and the United Arab Emirates announced Thursday that they are establishing full diplomatic relations in a US-brokered accord, which also required Israel to suspend its contentious plan to annex West Bank land sought by the Palestinians for a future state. Israel had previously planned to unilaterally move ahead with the measures on the basis of the US peace plan.

The agreement makes the UAE the third Arab country, after Egypt and Jordan, to have full, active diplomatic ties with Israel. Thursday’s joint statement said deals between Israel and the UAE were expected in the coming weeks in such areas as tourism, direct flights, and embassies.

Netanyahu on Sunday said he expects more Arab countries to normalize their ties with Israel after last week’s agreement with the United Arab Emirates, and that the process will eventually also drive peace with the Palestinians.

Sunday also saw telephone services between the United Arab Emirates and Israel initiated, as the two countries started opening diplomatic ties. Israeli news websites that had previously been blocked by UAE authorities could be accessed without using intermediary means to bypass internet filtering in the Emirates.

Emirati officials said Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan had called his Israeli counterpart, Gabi Ashkenazi.

Communications Minister Yoaz Hendel issued a statement “congratulating the United Arab Emirates on removing the blocks.”

“Many economic opportunities will open now, and these trust-building steps are an important step toward advancing states’ interests,” Hendel said.

Early Sunday, the Emirates’ state-run WAM news agency announced that a UAE company had signed an agreement with an Israeli company for research and study of the coronavirus pandemic.
