Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan on Saturday slammed UN special coordinator for the Middle East Tor Wennesland for meeting with the foreign minister of Iran, and said he was cutting ties with the official.

“Don’t forget to wash the blood of Israeli babies off your hands after that handshake,” said Erdan, sharing a photo of Wennesland shaking hands with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian earlier in the day.

“Tor Wennesland not only met with the Iranian regime’s FM, but didn’t even bother condemning Iran for its role in the massacre of Israeli women and children,” Erdan wrote on X. “It’s no secret that Hamas terrorists are openly praising Iran for funding, arming, and training them.”

“The UN’s support for and legitimization of genocidal terrorists is a threat to civilization!” he added.

“I am officially announcing the severance of my ties with Wennesland until he publicly condemns the Iranian regime of murder and terrorism.”

On Friday Erdan held a solidarity event for hostages held by Hamas in Gaza at which he denounced the UN’s stance on the crisis, charging that the body was indifferent to the murder of 1,300 Israelis and “does not want Israel to defend itself.”

The event, held ahead of a closed-door Security Council meeting on the war, spotlighted the families of Israelis and dual nationals taken captive during the terror organization’s massive attack.

A short video was screened at the event “showing the atrocities committed by Hamas on innocent civilians including women, children and the elderly, and explaining why Hamas is the same as ISIS,” Erdan’s office said.

Yoni Asher, Alana and Liam Zeitchik, and Rabbi Burton Visotzky, family members of the hostages, spoke at the gathering.

Representatives of over two dozen countries attended, including the US, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Argentina, Belgium, Bulgaria, Chile, Cyprus, Denmark, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Estonia, Gabon, Greece, Guatemala, Italy, Latvia, Romania, Poland and Serbia.

“For years the UN has put its head in the sand. As resources and funds poured into Gaza and went straight into Hamas’ terror coffers – the UN stayed silent. As Hamas dug terror tunnels under residential neighborhoods – the UN stayed silent,” said Erdan, according to his office.

He criticized the UN for wanting to “minimize collateral damage, but in the same breath condemn[ing] civilian evacuation.”

After Israel issued a warning Friday to residents in northern Gaza to evacuate ahead of a possible incursion or a stepped-up aerial offensive, a spokesperson said the UN “considers it impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences” and “strongly appeals for any such order, if confirmed, to be rescinded avoiding what could transform what is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation.”

“What we all hear is not the UN’s concern for civilians. What we hear is the UN’s indifference to the murder of 1,300 Israelis,” Erdan said. “The UN is making it clear that it does not want Israel to defend itself.”

“Hamas, the genocidal jihadist terror group, bears the sole responsibility for everything that happens in Gaza,” he added.

“What if your child – your baby – was being held in Gaza by a genocidal jihadist organization? What if it was your parents? What would you do? What would your country do?” he asked attendees.

“Israel is fully committed to bringing the hostages home and to obliterating Hamas’ terror capabilities,” he said.

Iran sent a message to Israel on Saturday stressing that it does not want further escalation in the Hamas-Israel war, but that it will have to intervene if the Israeli operation in Gaza continues, two diplomatic sources with knowledge of the situation told Axios.

Why it matters: The fighting between Hamas and Israel will turn into a regional war if Iran gets involved either directly or indirectly, such as through a militant group in Syria or by backing any Hezbollah decision to fully join the fighting.

  • Iran’s message, sent to Israel through the UN, comes as the Biden administration has been trying to deter Iran and Lebanon-backed Hezbollah, supported by Iran, from joining the war. This week, the U.S. sent an aircraft carrier group and fighter jets to the region.

Behind the scenes: Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian met with UN envoy to the Middle East Tor Wennesland on Saturday in Beirut, the two diplomatic sources said.

  • Wennesland urged Amir-Abdollahian to help prevent a spillover of the conflict in Gaza and Israel to the wider region in the Middle East.
  • The Iranian foreign minister replied that Iran doesn’t want the conflict to turn into a regional war and wants to try and help with the release of civilians who are being held hostage by Hamas in Gaza.
  • But Amir-Abdollahian stressed that Iran has its redlines. He said that if the Israeli military operation continues — and especially if Israel follows through on its promise of a ground offensive in Gaza — Iran will have to respond, according to the sources.

Wennesland called Israeli national security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi and other officials and conveyed Iran’s message, the sources said.

  • Wennesland’s office confirmed he met with Amir-Abdollahian on Saturday, saying they discussed “diplomatic efforts to release hostages, de-escalate and prevent a spillover of the conflict to the wider region.”
  • The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office declined to comment. Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

What they’re saying: Amir-Abdollahian, who earlier met with Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, said in a briefing with reporters in Beirut on Saturday that Israel must “stop the crimes against civilians in Gaza — because it might be too late in few hours.”

  • “I know about the scenarios that Hezbollah has put in place,” Amir-Abdollahian said. “Any step the resistance will take will cause a huge earthquake” for Israel.

The big picture: The latest fighting between Hamas and Israel began Oct. 7.

  • Israel has continued its heavy bombardment of the Gaza Strip after Hamas’ attack on Israel last Saturday. Violence also has been escalating along the Israel-Lebanese border and in the occupied West Bank.
  • More than 1,300 Israelis and 2,200 Palestinians have been killed.

Rocket sirens sounded in the Galilee and Golan Heights on Saturday evening, hours after Hezbollah and the IDF exchanged fire along the Lebanese border as the conflict between Israel and Hamas continued to escalate.

At least one rocket was intercepted after being fired from Syria toward the Golan Heights on Saturday evening, according to initial reports. Shortly after the rocket fire, the IDF launched artillery strikes on the source of the fire, according to the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit.

On Saturday morning, the IDF thwarted an attempt by a Palestinian terrorist cell directed by Hezbollah to infiltrate into Israeli territory.

The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit stated that an IDF drone struck the terrorist cell, killing a number of terrorists.

In the afternoon, Hezbollah fired about 30 mortars at IDF sites in the Har Dov (Shebaa Farms) area, with the IDF responding with artillery fire toward the source of the fire and additional sites. Simultaneously, the IDF struck a terrorist cell that attempted to fire an anti-tank missile at Israeli territory.

Hezbollah stated that it fired toward an additional IDF site in the Shebaa Farms area later in the afternoon as the exchange of fire between the IDF and the terrorist movement continued.

During the clashes, a Hezbollah terrorist identified as Ali Youssef Alaa Al-Din “Jawad Ali” was killed, Hezbollah announced on Saturday.

IDF intercepts ‘unidentified objects’ over northern Israel

On Friday night, the IDF said that it had intercepted two “unidentified targets” over Haifa. The nature of the targeted objects was unclear as of Saturday night. A third unidentified object was intercepted over Shefaram in northern Israel on Friday night.

After the interceptions, the IDF targeted a site belonging to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, saying the strike was conducted in response to the infiltration of the unidentified objects and fire which targeted an IDF drone.
