At least one person was murdered and five people wounded in a terror ramming at the Maccabim checkpoint on the central Jerusalem-Tel Aviv Route 443 highway on Thursday morning.

“I extend my condolences to the family of the victim of this morning’s vehicular attack and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said after receiving a briefing on the morning’s event. The defense minister will hold a security assessment. “This was an attack with severe consequences.”

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich arrived at the scene of the attack. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he, too, was being briefed on the details.

What happened?

The terrorist rammed into a first checkpoint, according to initial reports, and then drove another 10 kilometers in an effort to ram into a second checkpoint. The terrorist was neutralized by security forces at the Hashmonaim junction. The soldiers had been warned by security personnel that the terrorist was on his way and were prepared to neutralize him.

Some of the wounded were evacuated to Shaarei Tzedek Medical Center in Jeruslaem and Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer. Others were treated in the field by Magen David Adom. According to the first responders, injuries included abdominal obstruction as well as wounds to the limbs.

The terrorist was evacuated to Sheba. Police said he was a Palestinian in his 40s with an Israeli work permit.

In response to the attack, Abdel-Latif al-Kanou, the spokesman for the Hamas movement, said: “The occupation army and its settlers will continue to pay the price for the crimes of their extremist government. The resistance of our people will continue to escalate.”

This is a developing story.

Criminal practices’ will not go without a response, Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian vows during visit to Damascus

DAMASCUS, Syria — Iran’s foreign minister warned Wednesday that Israel would eventually face retribution following an alleged airstrike on the international airport of the Syrian city of Aleppo, after over a decade of such attacks.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made his comments during a news conference in the Syrian capital, Damascus, where he was beginning a two-day visit.

On Monday, an airstrike attributed to Israel damaged Aleppo’s airport, putting the runway out of service. The airport has been targeted several times this year, including two attacks in March that also put it out of service.

“I would like to strongly condemn the brutal attacks by the fake Israeli regime on Aleppo airport and other civilian areas in Syria,” Amir-Abdollahian said.

“The criminal practices by the Zionist entity in the region will not remain without retaliation,” he added.

Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes on targets inside government-controlled parts of Syria since 2011. While Israel’s military does not, as a rule, comment on specific strikes in Syria, it has admitted to conducting hundreds of sorties against Iran-backed groups attempting to gain a foothold in the country, over the last decade.

Tehran has been a main backer of the Syrian government since a 2011 uprising turned into full-blown civil war. It has sent thousands of Iran-backed fighters to Syria, helping to tip the balance of power in the favor of President Bashar Assad.

The Israeli military says it attacks arms shipments believed to be bound for those groups, chief among them Hezbollah. Additionally, airstrikes attributed to Israel have repeatedly targeted Syrian air defense systems.

There were no reports of injuries in the Aleppo strike.

It would be the fifth time in under a year that alleged Israeli strikes have put the Aleppo airport out of service, with a similar attack taking place in May 2023, two in March of this year, and one in September 2022.

Israel is believed to be targeting Syria’s airports to counter Iran’s growing use of commercial flights to bring military supplies into the country, which are later trucked into Lebanon to be used by the Hezbollah terror group.

The last alleged Israeli sortie over Syria was carried out on August 21, when fighter jets reportedly carried out strikes against targets in Damascus, wounding one Syrian soldier.

Amir-Abdollahian also said he had received a message from his Danish counterpart who informed him about plans by the Danish government to propose a law that would make it illegal to desecrate any holy book in Denmark. A recent string of public desecrations of the Quran in the Scandinavian country by a handful of anti-Islam activists has sparked angry demonstrations in Muslim countries.

“We welcome this move and we advise Sweden and other European countries to respect religions and holy books,” Amirabdollahian said.

For Muslims, the burning of the Quran represents a desecration of their religion’s holy text. In the past, Quran burnings have sparked protests across the Muslim world, some of them violent.

Archaeologists assume two canal systems found near Temple Mount and the City of David were used as part of a production facility.

Israeli archaeologists were stumped after discovering two 2,800-year-old channel installations dating back to the First Temple that were probably used for some sort of production, the Israeli Antiquities Authority announced on Wednesday.

The channel installations, which were found in digs by the IAA, Tel Aviv University, and the City of David, may be part of a larger industrial system, archaeologists said. While they assume they were used for soaking some product or other, even Israel Police couldn’t figure out what using its forensic investigative unit.

Whatever was produced in this facility was probably important for the Judean kingdom’s economy as it was found close to where the Temple and the king’s palace had been.

The newly discovered canal system is truly unique

“We looked at the installation and realized that we had stumbled on something unique, but since we had never seen a structure like this in Israel, we didn’t know how to interpret it,” said IAA researcher Dr. Iftach Shalev. “Even its date was unclear. We brought a number of experts to the site to see if there were any residues in the soil or rock that are not visible to the naked eye, and to help us understand what flowed or stood in the channels. We wanted to check whether there were any organic remains or traces of blood, so we even recruited the help of the police forensic unit and its research colleagues around the world, but so far – to no avail.”

TAU’s Prof. Yuval Gadot said that the mystery only deepened when they found the second canal system.

“This installation consists of at least five channels that transport liquids,” he said. “Despite some differences in the way the channels were hewn and designed, it is evident that the second installation is very similar to the first,”

“This is a period in which we know that Jerusalem spread over an area that included the City of David and the Temple Mount which served as the heart of the city.”

The second system’s discovery did, however, help the archaeologists determine that the facility went out of use sometime toward the end of the ninth century BCE.

“This is an era when we know that Jerusalem covered an area that included the City of David and the Temple Mount, which served as the heart of Jerusalem,” said Gadot. “The central location of the channels near the city’s most prominent areas indicates that the product made using them was connected to the economy of the Temple or Palace. One should note that ritual activity includes bringing agricultural animal and plant produce to the Temple; Many times, Temple visitors would bring back products that carried the sanctity of the place.”
