As Hezbollah exhibits its military preparedness, Metula enhances its security measures and fortifies its homes with mandated safe rooms.

Since the 2006 war between Israel and the armed Shi’ite group Hezbollah, the Israel-Lebanon border has seen periods of uneasy calm, intermittently disrupted by sporadic cross-border skirmishes and fire exchanges. Now, it appears that Hezbollah may be preparing for another prolonged military operation against its southern neighbor.

In response, the Israeli border town of Metula is bolstering its security to safeguard its citizens from a potential surge of violence from the north.

Hezbollah, a Lebanon-based militia acting largely as a proxy for Iran in the region, recently hosted members of the country’s foreign press corps to showcase its military readiness. The group is engaging in maneuvers and training exercises that it claims are in preparation for renewed attacks on Israel.

In an area that Israelis refer to as the “finger of the Galilee,” where Israeli territory is bordered on two sides by Lebanon and one side by the Golan Heights and Syria, an air of apprehension, strikingly at odds with the pastoral landscape, prevails.

Nestled within this finger is Metula, Israel’s northernmost town, whose city limits extend right up to the border.

In Metula, the high concentration of military vehicles and advanced equipment vigilantly monitoring the border 24/7 is impossible to overlook.

Special safe rooms being added to apartment buildings

Since 1995, Israeli law has mandated that all newly constructed housing includes specially designed safe rooms to shelter families from shelling. Contractors cannot receive approval for building plans, and new houses cannot be connected to utilities such as water, electricity, and sewage without these shelters.

Prior to 1995, apartment buildings were built with communal shelters. These are no longer deemed adequate, and public funds have been allocated to retrofit these structures, ensuring that every unit is equipped with its own safe room.

Accessible from within the house, these safe rooms serve as an additional space for the family, but one furnished with all the characteristics of an air-raid shelter.

These safe rooms are fortified with reinforced concrete walls at least 40 centimeters thick, providing effective protection during bombings. One-way valves permit air to flow from the inside out, whereas air from outside must pass through a filtration device. If a sensor detects lethal gas, the airflow from outside is entirely blocked.

Many who witnessed Hezbollah’s military exercise near the Israel-Lebanon border say they are convinced that the next round of violence between the militia and Israel is inevitable, and only a matter of time.

The pivotal uncertainty remains: Will Hezbollah’s chief, Hassan Nasrallah, and his associates confront Israel alone, as they have in the past, or will Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps or other forces allied with Tehran stand by their side?

Analysis / High Risk of Hezbollah Attack on Israel?

The latest Israeli intelligence estimate signals that the risk of war with Hezbollah is now the highest in years. Reports indicate that the Lebanese group is taking intensive steps to prepare for an attack on Israel and possibly a longer battle.

Hezbollah chief Nasrallah ordered the group’s elite Radwan forces to take positions closer to the Israeli frontier, Ynet reports. The deployment is a very significant offensive move and was recently completed, the report says.

Overall, Hezbollah increased the scope of frontline forces, upgraded its military gear, and can now strike Israel on short notice. The group held a large military drill this week to simulate attacks on border communities and abduction operations.

According to earlier reports, both Israel and Hezbollah expanded their military presence near the border ahead of a future clash. Reading between the lines, Israeli intel appears to show that Hezbollah is planning to launch an attack or a larger operation.

The IDF intelligence chief is warning that the risk of a military flareup that leads to a full-scale war is no longer low. Major General Aharon Haliva told a conference at Reichman University that Nasrallah is close to making a mistake that could spark a regional war.

Haliva added that the growing confidence of Syrian President Bashar Assad is also a factor that raises the danger of conflict. The potential for military escalation is high and the IDF is ready to use force, the top intel officer said.

General Haliva’s remarks signal that Israel has detected alarming moves across the northern border. The IDF is not sharing many details, but the latest Israeli message could be a warning to Hezbollah that its plans have been exposed.

Israel prepares for battle

Notably, the latest military assessment marks a sharp change in Israel’s view. A senior officer estimated last year that Nasrallah is strongly deterred by Israel’s power and wishes to a avoid a war.

However, Israel now believes that Nasrallah’s analysis has changed and Hezbollah is ready to initiate more aggressive action.

Moreover, defense chiefs are likely seeing indications that Hezbollah could miscalculate the Israeli response to an attack. A rocket barrage from Lebanon in April was another warning sign that the group is willing to take greater risks.

Meanwhile, Israel adjusted its deployment to counter the Hezbollah threat. The IDF bolstered border defenses with lethal weapon systems and prepared a response to a potential Hezbollah raid, Ynet says. The army also installed obstacles and technological means to slow down enemy forces.

In parallel, the IDF is building up its robot power to break Hezbollah’s defenses and boost strike capabilities. Notably, Israel also compiled a large list of Hezbollah targets for attack in case fighting erupts.

While Israel and Hezbollah likely prefer to fight limited battles, a clash could quickly spiral out of control. (READ MORE: Israel-Hezbollah war could change the Middle East)

The talks about normalization of the relationship between Israel and Saudi Arabia have become “intensive,” according to a News12 report Tuesday night.

The Saudi demands from the United States include thawing the arms deals that have been frozen by the Biden administration, a defense pact with the US, and a full nuclear program. As to Israel, the Saudis demand reviving the 2-state process with the PA. And the US conditions its support for peace with the Saudis, as well as its support for a future Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, on burying the judicial reform.

The two demands from Netanyahu are dovetailed: whether or not his government starts serious negotiations to give away Judea and Samaria, the Americans want a powerful Supreme Court in place to curtail new settlements in the liberated territories.

Barak Ravid reported on March 29, citing two American sources familiar with the matter, that the morning after Prime Minister Netanyahu had ousted Defense Minister Yoav Galant, President Joe Biden delivered a personal, secret message to Netanyahu demanding he stops the judicial reform. Shortly thereafter, Netanyahu suspended the judicial reform.

On Tuesday, State Dept. spokesperson Miller was asked: “Are you aware of phone conversations between the Israeli prime minister and the Saudi Crown Prince on normalization between the two countries, and did the US play any role in this regard?”

Miller responded: “We are aware of the reports. … I’m not going to speak about any private diplomatic conversations, I will say that as a broader measure, we, of course, fully support Israel’s integration into the Middle East region, including normalizing relations with Saudi Arabia.”

At the Arab League summit last week, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman proclaimed: “The Palestinian issue was and still is the central issue for the Arab countries and is at the top of the kingdom’s priorities. We will not delay in providing assistance to the Palestinian people in recovering their lands, restoring their legitimate rights, and establishing an independent state in the borders of 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.”

Last week, Maariv revealed that negotiations that began about a year ago regarding direct flights from Israel to the Hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, have led to a breakthrough, and Riyadh is inclined to approve the move. Only Muslims living in Israel who wish to participate in the pilgrimage to Mecca will be allowed to board the planes.

Needless to say, those will not be El Al planes.

The message here remains what it has always been: every move on the part of the center-left, the left, the extreme-left, the anarchists, the billionaires who fund the anarchists, the Biden administration, and the EU is focused on one target: uprooting the Jewish settlements from Judea and Samaria and establishing a Palestinian state that will rule the entire area.

If you’ve asked yourself, why would the Israeli left, which comprises captains of industry, bankers, hedge fund managers, hi-tech wizards, media barons, and whole swaths of the security apparatus, including the IDF, Shin Bet, Mossad, and the police – this is the answer. The plan has always been to kill the settlements, because if you manage to kill the settlement, you remove the most resilient component of traditional Jewish society in Israel, following which the heirs of secular Zionism would return to power indefinitely.

Sounds like a conspiracy theory? So did the idea that the father of the settlement enterprise, Arik Sharon, would uproot thousands of Jewish settlers. It was inconceivable.
