The appearance of the Yak in Iran is a major development in the region as it is confirmed a perception that Iran is on the cusp of increasing its military threats and capacity.

Iranian pro-government and government media say that the country is now operating the advanced Yak-130 training aircraft from Russia. The Yak-130 is designed to prepare Iranian pilots to fly advanced aircraft, such as 4th generation fighter jets. Iran has been seeking to acquire Russian aircraft for years to bolster its air force. It is not clear yet if this new arrival will mean that the much sort-after Iran-Russia Su-35 deal will be completed.

Images of the Yak-130 were released on Tasnim media, a pro-regime outlet with close ties to the IRGC.

The aircraft was developed in Russia and is used as a training jet for combat aircraft. Reports say it could help pilots to learn to fly the Su-35 or Su-57. This would mean a significant upgrade for Iran’s air force, which mostly consists of older aircraft, some dating from the 1960s and 1970s.

The technological advancement of the Yak-130

Pictures of the Yak-130 training fighter have been published in Iran, which show that this plane has been handed over to the Air Force, Iranian media reported. Pilots are expected to be able to learn from the trainer how to use various modern equipment on aircraft, such as HUD display and also fire control and weapon systems, the reports continued.

The Yak-130 has a radar with the ability to identify numerous targets at the same time and enable interception at ranges of 60km. In the field of navigation, this aircraft is equipped with GLONASS and GPS. GLONASS is similar to GPS used in Russia.

The Yak has been used in various capacities since 2011 and reports say it is used in Algeria, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Belarus, Myanmar and Syria, which have either ordered or used this aircraft.

The advanced trainer is made by the Russian Yakulov Company. It helps pilots learn to fly advanced 4th generation aircraft. The US F-35, by comparison, is a 5th generation aircraft.

The trainer can also help train for close air support missions and can carry several tons of ammunition, such as different weapons that be placed on the wings and fuselage. The aircraft can also carry a 23mm gun pod, Tasnim News says. It can also carry various weapons such as

“250 and 500 kg bombs, 80, 122 and 330 mm rockets, Kab 500 guided bombs, Kha-29 guided missiles and two R-73 thermal missiles for air combat…. Also, this aircraft can carry two electronic warfare pods on both ends of the wings and external fuel tanks to increase the operational range.” It has a range of around 800km.

The appearance of the Yak in Iran is a major development in the region and as it is confirmed and develops the story will reinforce a perception that Iran is on the cusp of increasing its military threats and capacity. This is important because Iran wants to increase military exports and imports in October as some sanctions expire.

The United States has seen notable progress by Ukrainian forces in southern Zaporizhzhia in the last 72 hours, the White House said on Friday, adding separately that it could not confirm reports that Russian missiles were put on combat duty.

“We have noted over the last 72 hours or so some notable progress by Ukrainian armed forces …in that southern line of advance coming out of the Zaporizhzhia area, and they have achieved some success against that second line of Russian defenses,” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said.

“That is not to say …that they aren’t mindful that they’ve still got some tough fighting ahead of them as they try to push further south”

Speaking to reporters on a conference call, Kirby said it was up to Ukraine on how to capitalize on their success.

“That is not to say …that they aren’t mindful that they’ve still got some tough fighting ahead of them as they try to push further south” or that Russia could launch a counter effort, he added.

Russian ICBMs on standby?

Kirby also said he was not in a position to confirm reports on Friday that Russia’s nuclear capable Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles had been put on combat duty.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian arrived in Lebanon Friday for key meetings with Hezbollah terror leader Hassan Nasrallah, and to meet other groups such as Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, according to local reports.

Amir-Abdollahian arrived in Lebanon on a short visit from Syria, the pro-Iran Al-Mayadeen media said. He had been in Syria to meet Syrian regime leader Bashir al-Assad.

In Syria, Iran has been encouraging the regime to do more to pressure the US to leave.

Nasrallah warns against any Israeli ‘miscalculations’

Nasrallah warned Israel against any “miscalculations” in his meeting with Amir-Abdollahian. The meeting also included discussions of how Hezbollah and other Iran-backed proxies are at the peak of their power in Lebanon. The Iranian diplomat slammed Israel and other “enemies” for causing instability in Syria, according to Iranian pro-regime Tasnim News.

According to the reports in Lebanon, the Iranian met the leaders of Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Beirut, in a closed meeting, “during which he affirmed Tehran’s adherence to the strategy of supporting and resisting the Palestinian people and the issue of liberating the land [of Israel].”

“Amir-Abdollahian also held discussions with the Speaker of Lebanon’s Parliament Nabih Berri,” Iran International reported.

Iran has several goals in Lebanon. It wants to end a crisis over the lack of a president in the country after feuding political parties did not choose a new president. Iran backs Hezbollah and other groups. Lebanon’s president by tradition is a Christian and some Christian politicians support Hezbollah, Iran and the Syrian regime. Others do not, creating a crisis.

Iran is fighting for influence and control in Lebanon

The Iranian diplomat said Iran is ready to help Lebanon economically.

“We renewed once again our readiness for economic cooperation, and the readiness of Iranian companies to solve the electricity problem in Lebanon,” he said. This means making Lebanon dependent on Iran. According to Al-Mayadeen the Iranian foreign minister also met the Lebanese foreign minister.

Iran is fighting for influence and control in Lebanon. The visit comes a day after we reported that the United States is exploring the possibility of resolving the long-standing border dispute between Lebanon and Israel, senior White House adviser Amos Hochstein said on Thursday at the end of a two-day visit to Lebanon.

According to the report on Thursday, the senior White House adviser said he visited southern Lebanon during his trip “to understand and learn more about what is needed to be able to potentially achieve an outcome.”

Iran is also holding discussions in Lebanon about Saudi Arabia’s role. Saudi Arabia helped end the Lebanese civil war in 1989 and it has worked with leading Sunni families in Lebanon. However, Riyadh became non-plussed with Lebanon’s slouching into Iran’s hands and reduced its role in 2017. Now with Iran-Saudi reconciliation, both countries may mediate again in Lebanon.

The Iranian foreign minister met Nabih Berri, a leading politician and Shi’ite in Lebanon. The Iranian diplomat was last in Lebanon in April.
